In the mid or late 70's, I was on the beach in St. Augustine, FL at noon
with a Radio Shack TRF.  WCBS-880, WNBC-660 and WBZ-1030 were all listenable
without any fading.  Given the path was pretty much all salt water, and
WABC-770 was not audible, I'd have to guess it was groundwave.  The added
land path for WABC killed it off, where skywave probably would have made it.

While we're on the subject of propagation, has anyone noticed that being in
close proximity to a tower can cause some interesting effects?  In 1976 I
was parked next to the then WGNG-550 tower and caught the Tampa, FL station
on 1380.  Drove away and it vanished.  At home and at work, positioning a
small portable next to a guy wire causes some real signal enhancements.
And, by moving to another set of guy wires, sometimes a whole different set
of stations is apparent.
