[IRCA] The Newest ULR DXing Craze... the "Frankenlights"
Hello All,
Thanks to Kevin Schanilec (the originator of the "Ultralight" radio
moniker way back in December), we now have an officially-approved name for the
outrageously juiced-up ULR's with huge transplanted loopsticks and
frighteningly sensitive performance--- the "Frankenlights."
Pure vanity projects obviously initiated by a mad scientist who has
already had WAY too much fun with ULR DXing, these tiny terrors take great
pleasure in competing with any portable on the planet, even to the point of
embarrassing them on occasion. Fueled by 6.25" "Godzilla Bars" from
Japanese-market ICF-S5 parts radios, the Frankenlights prefer to haunt salty, ocean air
environments around sunrise, although they will occasionally be found in the
more modest DXing environments of Puget Sound.
The two SRF-39FP analog Frankenlights recently welcomed a new DT-200VX
digital sibling into the family, and although the trio only have a total
combined weight of about one pound, their DX performance is anything but
lightweight. The scientist involved can't wait to take his new "family" to
Grayland.. in the hopes of scaring up some serious new ULR countries.
73, Gary.
