[IRCA] Definition of the "Unlimited Class" of Ultralight Radio

The Definitions Committee was called into action to more precisely
define the erh, ah, limits of the Unlimited Class of Ultralight
Radios for the purposes of the Firsts and Records List and the
upcoming DX Sprint. Some very creative folks had even thought of
using the ULr simply to tune the IF of a communications receiver and
have that mega-buck receiver do the heavy lifting (or some such.)
That is obviously not what we had in mind when we founded a Class
that would encourage modification and supplementation of
Ultralights.... So, after quite a bit of work, the Committee adopted
the attached paragraph. I think that they did a great job of
balancing the desire to have broad latitude for experimentation while
also preserving the essential quality of an Ultralight receiver. I've
adopted the paragraph for purposes of the List and will place a file
at DXer.ca that defines both Barefoot and Unlimited Classes for all to see.

"Unlimited Class is any UL radio as defined and recognized by the
committee with any of the following changes or additions: Internal
modifications relating to BPF or IF filter replacement or improvement
and replacement of resistors and capacitors in the audio processing
section are permitted and encouraged. Peripheral accessories such as
preamps, external antennas, amplified or passive, dsp or analog
filters, Q-multiplier, antenna couplers, tuners, phasers or other
matching devices may be used. The incoming signal must first enter
the ferrite bar antenna of the UL, or the ferrite bar may be bypassed
and signal fed into the RF and IF stages via the input points of the
bypassed ferrite antenna, being processed solely through the complete
circuitry of the UL (excepting the ferrite bar antenna if
desired.) The purpose and spirit of this rule is to use all of the
internal circuitry of the UL. Other than at the antenna input where
the signal input may be pre-amplified, through use of tuned circuits,
RF amplifiers and Q-multipliers, no active device may be inserted
into the circuitry. This disallows heterodyning or frequency
conversion devices where by the Ultralight is used solely as an IF
amplifier, fixed or tunable. This rule does not prevent the
attachment of a digital frequency readout device."
