Kyllä muutosta on tapahtunut. Sen huomaa, kun kuuntelee
HF-meritaajuuksia. Ei siellä enää kukaan pahemmin
sähkötystä kilkuttele eikä ääneen kutsuja luikkaa.
Digitaalista sirinää ja purinaa se olla pitää.
Toisaalta kyllä uskoisin, että tuon luokan risteilijässä ja tuossa
liikenteessä kuin kyseinen m/s Amsterdam/PBAD, olisi myös
hätävarana HF-kalustoa. Saattavat sijaita jossain komentosillan
alueella.
Vertailuna pari kuvaa vuosimallin 1955 laivan radiohytistä.
Tässäkin kopperossa tuli istuttua aikoinaan yhteensä
n. vuosi. Vastaanottimet pyöreätauluisia analogisia
Pedersenin tekniikkaa. Vaan yhteys Helsinkiradioon Keimolaan
syntyi aina, jopa Tyyneltämereltä.

Thought that I’d mention the radio situation on-board our ship, the
Amsterdam. Last night, I noted the door to the radio room (with a
“restricted, no entry” sign on the door) slightly ajar, so I stuck my
head in and said hello. The radio officer, is not really a radio officer
at all, but an IT specialist. This explains his puzzled look when I
asked whether or not they still had HF radio on board. The answer is NO!
Not even as a back-up. Everything’s satellite (and he showed me the rack
of satellite equipment). Otherwise, there’s VHF on the bridge, but
nothing else…and this is on a vessel specifically designed and launched
in 2000 for deep sea voyages (including around the world cruises). Sad,
indeed! …….Walt (one day out of Honolulu).
