The problem with using that article literally is that the observation
period is very short. Over the years that I DX'ed actively in Northern
NJ, the onset of the MwA was usually late November or early December.
It often lasted into February. One can't say that it couldn't have
started already but that certainly wouldn't be the norm.

Unless that solar flux alert Mauno quoted had something to do with it,
which is certainly possible, there's been nothing else.
