Walt,
Nick reported KIFW Sitka to be quite strong out in the Pacific off the
coast of BC too. But with a local 7 miles away and the Northerly lobe of
the EWE's phased, I may have to catch KKEE off.
I still need:
KIAM-630-Nenana
KIYU-910-Galena (may be silent)
KNSA-930-Unalakleet
KFBX-970-Fairbanks (got a tentative)
KVAK-1230-Valdez
KIFW-1230-Sitka*
KLAM-1450-Cordova*
KIAL-1450-Unalaska (50 watts, CP for 4200 w)
Both KIFW & KLAM I have QSL'd from 1965 living in Seward AK, but I would
love to log them here.
I wish I knew then what I know now about phasing and EWEs, as I worked
at KVAS (now KKEE) in the 70s when the station was on the air M-Th
6AM-10 PM, F&Sat 6 AM to Mid and Sundays 8 AM to 8 PM. I could have
probably nabbed KIFW. That was long before KVAK sign on though.
It is hard to believe when I lived in Seward AK in the 60s, there were
only 15 AM stations and a handful of AFRTS outlets. It was easy to log
all the stations in an evening or all day in the Winter months. Now
there are 41 stations I think.
Nothing was in Kotzebue or Barrow then. Only one station (KICY) in Nome.
I remember when they signed on with 5 KW. I QS'd them, that was in 65 I
believe. No stations were in Dillingham or Bethel either. Ah, the good
ol' days.
After the earthquake of 1964, the Seward station (KIBH 1340 250w), was
wiped out from the wave. The station ended up in the middle of the
highway (3rd Avenue), from the edge of bay and the tower ended up in the
middle of the bay. A few weeks after the quake civil defense came out
and donated a 50 watt transmitter set on 1490 to serve Seward operated
from the back of the Seward Library. It was still operating that way
(with a longwire) when we left in 1967. The coverage was 3 or 4 miles
out of town and that was it. In 1967 after we left, the station moved to
950 with 1 KW where it is now.

Patrick
