On 9/28 I took off on what was supposed to have been a two-week trip
visiting friends and relatives in Orlando, Highlands NC, Chattanooga,
Franklin TN, Owensboro KY and Brainerd MN. Because of a death in the
family (mother-in-law), I returned home on 10/5 so didn't get further
than Highlands. Observations:
ORLANDO
810 WEUS Orlovista. "The Big 810" and "Orlando's true oldies
station." Surprised to hear the music //1560 (presumably WINT
Melbourne). The 1560 outlet disappeared at 7:15pm ET 10/1 but I
didn't hear a sign-off. Must be a syndicated oldies format.
1030 WONQ Oviedo/Orlando . ON 9/28 at 8pm EDT, it was // with
WHOO-1080 with high school football in English. Other than that, it
was in SS. Driving northward on FL 408/US75 10/2, pre-sunrise and in
a downpour, it was the most enduring Orlando signal.
1080 WHOO Kissimmee. I was staying in downtown Orlando and WHOO's
night signal was there but not particularly usable so I don't think
they could have been on day power at night. On 10/2 presunrise,
however, as I was driving northward, they were gettin' out pretty good.
1100 Cuban wobbler. Frequently heard and was noticeable as far north
as Ocala at 9am 10/2.
1180-81. I didn't sense the 1kHz het at nights but did notice it the
morning of 10/2 driving northward.
1240 WINK Ft. Myers. Heard several times with mention of "1240 &
1270" but never actually heard calls.
1510/1520 hets. Noted several nights but I can't really attribute
them to Belgium/Saudi Arabia because I couldn't hear any audio.
HIGHLANDS NC
No locals. Nighttime was absolute mush on virtually every channel. It
would have taken a bit of time to extricate anything so I didn't
bother trying. I tuned in LW beacons instead. Strongest day signals
there are WGCR-720 and WKVL-850.
EQUIPMENT
I carried the ICF-2010 in my briefcase; the Palomar amp and two loops
were in the checked-in luggage along with a picture of all the gear
connected together at home an explanatory note asking TSA personnel
to page or call me on my cell phone for a demonstration. In both
Seattle and Atlanta (trip departure points) they were excited about
the 2010 so removed it from the briefcase and ran in through their
scanner twice. It was returned with no comments. I didn't look like
they even opened my suitcase.
