Re: [IRCA] Housing the RF-Space SDR-IQ

Hi Patrick,

The potential exists in SDR-type radios to have phenomenal noise blankers. I
know that the twin NBs in my own SDR-1000 are excellent. One is intended for
short duration pulses (like electric fence clicks) and the other for longer
buzzes & noises. Both of these blankers can have their threshold level
(sensitivity) adjusted easily through a software dialog box.

The noise blankers in the SDR-1000 "look" at the signal before and after the
noise burst, notches out the noise, and then-- (here comes the clever
part)-- insert a COPY of a brief moment of the "good" signal into the empty
spot left by the notched-out noise pulse. The result is the best noise
blanking action I personally have encountered in a receiver.

The SDR-IQ and SDR-14 could have the same performance level if the author of
the SpectraVue software would update his program with a similar approach to
noise blanking.

Such are the benefits of these new software-defined radios. Manufacturers of
traditional rigs can't upgrade their product with an easily distributed
software package or version upgrade; ie., once a Drake R-8, Rev. A, always a
Drake R-8, Rev. A...

Thanks Rob for the info on the SDR-IQ. However, before I would invest in
one, it would need a good noise blanker. Otherwise is is rather useless
here. The clicking of the nearby electric fence would drive me nuts. All
three of my receivers have NB.
