[IRCA] Sealing against moisture

Patrick,

You're concerned about moisture on your transformer containment box, even 
to the point of
putting silica in it. The question comes to mind then, why put holes in the 
bottom of
the box? Wouldn't they be a natural point for entry of moisture?

Wouldn't that be a point of entry for moisture?

Without taking this to the point of being ridiculous, I'd suggest a plastic 
box with
an SO-259 connector for the coax's point of entry. Then seal the whole 
PL-259/SO-259
mated group with RTV ("Sealastic").

Then place two 6x32 screws and matching nuts on the other end of the box. 
Make the wire
connections to the screws using spade connectors crimped or soldered to the 
antenna
and ground wires. Tighten the hardware judiciously, and then seal that in 
RTV also.

Finally, with the lid still off the plastic box, fill it with mineral oil. 
Place the
lid on the box and wipe off the residual mineral oil with alcohol and the 
seal the
box shut with RTV.

Periodic checks of the transformer enclosure will reveal any leaks of 
mineral oil.
