Didn't start listening until 1235UT, so probably missed the best
signals. Although there were carriers on most 9 kHz channels below
1300kHz, they were mostly very weak, and most seemed from Australia /
NZ.

Stronger ones were 675, 756, 774 (which had audio traces), and 1503,
all mostly DU, though 774 had Asia mixed in. 1287 seemed to be an
Asiatic carrier, but was one of the few.

Strongest carrier overall was 1098 which looped towards the
Marshalls, but no sign of any audio.

best wishes,

Nick

The KTLA News at 10 just won't be the same without Hal as he was always
in good spirits and it was enjoyable to watch how he did the news with a
sense of humour and pitching in with a joke about someone or
something.,getting a chuckle from everyone at Channel 5, here on local
cable. Also Hal made sure that the news always included an item about
space as and an aviation buf he was also interested in that subject and
I hope he had the opportunity to watch the launch of the latest shuttle
mission.I think he would have traded in his anchor position for a chance
to go on a flight.I'll miss Hal as my favourite newsman but I think I
heard him say once that "The show must go on".--Bill in BC

Anyone who owns one of Joseph Worcester's SM-1 and SM-2 Space Magnets
(which I gleefully call Space Maggots) should read this.

After working on three of the SM-2s, I had this problem common to all
three:

At times, especially with a new 9-V battery installed, the Space Magnet
will
break into uncontrollable oscillation.

The problem is that Joseph used germanium transistors in the first stage
of
the loop amplifier, and earlier germanium transistors "age" in such a
manner
that their gain rises. After a while, it rises so high that the circuit
oscillates intermittently.

A good permanent "fix" is to change the collector resistor of the first
stage (which has the germanium transistor) from 2,700 ohms to 4,700
ohms.

If anyone has this problem with their "Space Maggot" and wishes me to
fix it,
please contact me directly at <MWDXer@xxxxxxx> or <WD4INP@xxxxxxx>.
