I spent this past weekend at Cannon Beach on the Oregon Coast (Sorry Patrick, there was no hope for getting together, I was there with about 20 other people, mostly in-laws, to celebrate my wife's parents' 60th anniversary). I did however, bring my new SDR-IQ receiver, which conveniently enough arrived the day before we left.
I managed a few moments of quality time with this new toy. Our hotel was on a bluff overlooking the beach, so I had no problem putting out about 50 feet of wire from the balcony. It was a new experience using a receiver that was nothing more than a 3.75" square PC board hooked to a computer, but it was fun to use most of the time. I was favorably impressed with what I heard for mid summer. Audio quality was quite nice, sensitivity was good.
I tried using it to record 190 kHz of spectrum at local sunrise on all three mornings. The first two attempts were unsuccessful due to computer or operator issues. This morning's effort turned out better, with audio from JOUB-774 in & out 1125-1215 UTC, plus bits and pieces of JOIB-747 poking through the KXL-750 splatter at times. I also had hets on 738 792 819 828 & 891. I spot-checked 720 760 and 830 for Hawaiians but heard only mainland stations. I did however, heard a 738 het from presumed Tahiti all three nights between 10-12 pm local time.
Overall, it was a good first try at using this impressive little receiver. I'm looking forward to using it on DXpeditions this fall when conditions are better.
Bruce
