1180 was the initial high-powered outlet based in the Keys aimed at
Cuba. Many attendees from the 1972 NRC convention at Coral Gables rode
down to see the facility ( or what little the public was able to see ).
Initially the directioal pattern was nowhere near as sharp and I heard
it in NJ regularly. It was 50 kw at that time. There was some talk at
the time that the pattern was loose by intent so that the exile
community in South Florida could also listen as there was little
programming ofr them at the time elsewhere.

There was also a similar transmitter on 1040 on Tortugas Key, also
reportedly 50kw, also heard by me in NJ -- and in fact I believe I
heard both from Syracuse NY in the mid-1960's, but I don't have that
log handy.
