Hi Group:
I was in Columbus the weekend of June 10 & noted WVKO still off.
Also I noted WPAY, 1400, Portsmouth, OH, was not on the list of silent
stations. It had been off for years until it returned in 2005 with rather
eccentric talk shows, but it only lasted a few months. Appears to have been
off since sometime in the Spring of 2006. I wouldn't be surprised if
license gets surrendered as Portsmouth is very economically depressed & is
served by 2 other AM's (WNXT, WIOI) and a multitude of FM's, 2 commercial
ones of its own plus all the Huntington/Ashland stations. WPAY-FM remains
the dominant c&w station in southern Ohio.
I got out of Ohio last week, all the way to Charleston, SC, but was on a
choir tour with my two HS-aged daughters. Lots of rain, some singing, a
little swimming in the ocean, but not the sort of trip to carry DX equipment
along. Not even a car radio to do a decent scan, just an old Walkman with
almost no AM sensitivity at all. I listened mostly to the Summerville
oldies station (WAZS-980) & the ESPN-910 outlet, WTMZ, "The Team". Also
noted WTMA doing local talk & nx in the A.M. Someday I hope to travel with
a decent radio. Anybody got any suggestions as to which little one might be
best for any other such trips I take?
