It won't. In order to warp the pattern, it would have to absorb and re-radiate a fair bit of power. That level of power would absolutely toast a receiver. Since that has never happened to me, I'm sure any effects of BOGs near towers has been unmeasurable.
For example, the WDDZ-550 night array has about 250 watts into each of two towers. Were something to affect the pattern, it would have to efficiently radiate at least 25 or so watts. The BOG is not an efficient radiator, at least compared to a 300' tower. I am sure that 25 watts of RF at the BOG terminals would be really noticeable to the radio. Even without the notch filter, the internal attenuator on the Palstar brings 550 down off the meter peg. A watt or two would be more than what I think I'm seeing. Heck, if a BOG picked up useable power, I'd send it to a rectifier and use it instead of a solar cell. (grin)
I don't see AM pattern distortion as any issue at all, neither directional nor non-directional.
