Three DXers were killed in southeastern Missouri in a car
wreck on the way to Indianapolis, the third was one of the Nittler
brothers from (I believe) Omaha. I am pretty sure that Francis
is the brother who died and Maurice was the surviving brother.
I was at the 1962 deal. I had arrived by train from NJ. I had never
met any of those DXers who were involved. I do remember
"interviewing" David F. Thomas there about his eclipse/DXing
adventures. I still have that tape, recorded on Dave Roys' Wollensak.
What you say about three lane roads is true. One (US 1) ran
from Petersburg VA to the NC border and I was on it often during my
college days travels. It was awful. I have a cousin who came close
to dying on a 3-lane road in Texas when two cars pulled out at
once to pass and met headon in the center, which was the typical
fault scenario for these roads. The gamble you could pass, and
the other guy heading the other way would not.
