Hi, fellas. From a wet and wild Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands). Storm force south-easterlies today, so there's horizontal rain tonight. I'm at a cousin of Wanda's (my spouse) and just enjoyed a very nice deer roast. Yummm!
I checked my list of Alaskans still to hear. Some are understandable, such as Barrow on 680, but others I don't understand such as some relatively high power Fairbanks stations and Anchorage. It's pretty amazing how strong coastal stations from the lower 48 and BC/Alberta can be here. They're pretty pesky for the most part. I'm surprised how powerful 900 Victoria is ....all day and night here. 1070 isn't audible during the day, but well heard during darkness hours. As far as 680 is concerned, if it's not KNBR (which is there all day and night here), it's the Alberta French language station. Otherwise nothing else, so far. Conditions these past few nights have not favoured Alaska, unfortunately. That first night or two...forget now whether that was Saturday, Sunday or Monday night, the Alaskans were faboulous. I just started at the bottom of the band and worked up, logging most of them. Finally stopped around the middle of the band at 03:30 local. I was able to mp
3 all the local ids of these stations.
As for TP this morning, wow! I'm sure it was much better than yesterday morning. TAs were dead last night, but this morning, after IDing a couple more Alaskans, I switched over to TP to find 1575 just "booming" in with AFN Japan programming....this went on hour after hour. I finally got an ID from them (actually 2) as "You are listening to the American Forces Network", or such and this was repeated from another site a second or two latter. I couldn't believe the strength (up to S9) and how long it lasted (upto around 18:00 UTC). Koreans dominated this morning. At 17:30 there were still numerous audios available. Especially on the upper half of the band. A quick check revealed lots of Korean stations here...MBC, KBS 1, etc. HLAZ was very strong signing off in Russian at 17:30. Weaker when they came back for an hour at 18:00. Not to bad at all! I was so mesmorized by AFN that I didn't check anything else for the most part this morning. I did here an Australian, th
ough at the top end of the band, but not as well as yesterday.
Only a couple more mornings to have fun before heading home to Victoria. Hope everyone is well and having as much fun as I am. My plan is to post as many of the Alaskan IDs as possible, probably at www.dxer.ca website. Thanks, Colin! ....Walt Salmaniw, Masset, BC.
