I use a couple of different Sony MD recorders that have mic inputs, and
go line-out MD to line-in PC to record the audio onto the PC using Cool
Edit. A pain for sure compared to USB high speed transfers. However, the
newest Sony HD-MD recorder seems to be the answer to this problem:

It allows high-speed data transfers of recorded material back to the PC
via USB including standard format MD's, it has input level adjustments
and meters, and can function as a USB memory device. It seems like a
more "professional" field recording unit. A bit pricey in the $300
range, but I've definitely put it on my "drool list" of gadgets.
