Jim:

This is an easy one and I am sure there will be a flood of answers 
from other DXers.  Many DXers use impedence transformers to connect 
their antennas to coax.  You can see them sometimes marketed as a 
"balun".  I have wound so many coils I can almost do it in my sleep.  
Not only does this help to electronically match your antenna to the 
coax, but it also electricallly isolates the antenna from the coax 
and at the same time prevents common-mode noise from going back to 
the radio through the coax.

Rather than re-write here what others have written about the subject
