Boys and girls:
A long long time ago, circa 1961 to 1965, I worked at
a radio station in Roswell, New Mexico. I kept their
transmit chain in tip-top shape. And part of that was
to exercise the transmitter. I would run full proofs
perhaps monthly. When the modulators or the RF
final got weak I would know it and replace them. The
station owner kinda complained but he knew full well
that I was doing the right thing. The station sounded
*great*.
"Exercising the transmitter" meant I would sign on
the station at midnight for an hour or so (it was a 5 kW
daytimer for a while, 500 watts at night later). I had
the automation system used for the FM side all set up
to deliver a live-sounding rock-n-roll program.
We would get an occasional collect phone call which
I was obligated to decline and a pile of letters from
folks.
> But you know what? I do it anyways. Why? Because I have as much fun producing it as y'all do listening to it.
But you know what? Paul, you took the words right
outta my mouth!
