[IRCA] Not exactly your local DJ

That is the title of an interesting article by Joyzelle Davis in the
Mile High Tech section of the Rocky Mountain News today. It is about
Jones Radio located in the Denver suburb of Centennial. The article says
that Jones syndicates DJ hosted programs delivered by satellite in 11
formats. They employee nearly 100 DJs and provide programming for 2,500
stations. The article talks about how the programs are carefully crafted
to sound like local content and how they are very careful to not reveal
to the audience that the programs do not originate locally. It says that
most of their clients are in small to medium sized markets.

I found it interesting that the stations do not pay for using the
service. They only have to provide two minutes per hour in which Jones
can insert commercials sold through their New York based advertising
sales firm. That makes the service affordable for even the smallest
stations.

Jones started this service in 1989. Hoover's lists Jones Radio's 2005
sales at $56.8 million.

An interesting side note is that Jones' studios are located a short
distance from one of the largest live concert venues in the Denver area.
Big name artists often stop by the studios to be interviewed on the air
since Jones provides a nationwide outlet to a large audience. This can
cause problems on a local level since listeners think that the big name
personality is actually at their local radio station. The article says
that sometimes the local radio stations are swamped by fans hoping to
see one of their favorite stars as they leave the studio.
