Jim,

I have never owned an R71A, but I thought about buying one at a time. I
used Chuck Boehnke's briefly a couple times in Hawaii to play with. A
darn good receiver. The only thing I did not like was the poor audio.
But it is a top notch receiver. $30 is not bad if it is in good shape
with all of the goodies like Passband tuning.
