The NC station seems to be on day power a lot lately and has been heard at least as far NW as Madison WI 73 KAZ

I suspect that the 1350AM station Bert heard with CNN News and lots of dead air was one of the two:

WZNN SuperTalk 1350 Black Mountain-Asheville, NC

WNNG-AM 1350 Warner Robbins, GA

if it was WZNN, they might not have dropped power.

I've emailed both stations and both are going to be checking their logs later today.
