[IRCA] Saturday Oct 27 West Coast Trans-Pacifics - The night that drove old DXers down... PART ONE

*In a continuing series of epic mornings, I bring you yet another epic
morning... strap yourself in listeners...*
*Session observation: Today it felt like all the bands potential was
distilled and reduced into the lower 2/3 of the band -- as in 531 up to*
*1206 khz - after that it felt noisier with less stunning signals...*

PART ONE --
KHZ COUNTRY STATION POWER MONTH/DATE RECEPTION DETAILS
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
531 JAPAN JOQG Morioka 10 kW JOQG, Oct 27 1350 - Sports event - Sumo
perhaps - easy //
567, 585, 594, 612, 666 and on and on and on...
(Newell,Victoria, BC)

540 CHINA CNR1 (Various locations) October 27 1415 - Easy // with 639 Khz
at times over and under fading CBK Saskatchewan - Chinese talk. If there
was going to be a morning when this channel produced, this was it. Wahoo!
(Newell, B.C.)

558 SOUTH KOREA HLQH Yeong-il 250 kW KBS 2, Oct 27 1246 - Solid signal //
603 with endless Korean pops -
Solid hints of Japanese speaking underneath - assuming JOCR (Newell,
Victoria B.C.)

567 JAPAN Sapporo 100 kW JOIK, Oct 27 1247 - Very strong NHK1 programming
anchoring all the others - 531, 585, 594, 612, 666, 675 (Newell, Victoria
B.C.)

585 JAPAN Kushiro 10 kW JOPG, Oct 27 1248 - // 567 khz and the lot with
sports event - Sumo? Sounded more like baseball or a larger event...
(Newell, Victoria B.C.)

594 JAPAN Tokyo 300 KW JOAK, Oct 27 1248 - Solidly holding channel with
live sporting event - Japanese - // 531, 585, 567, etc... (Newell,
Victoria B.C.)

603 CHINA CNR1 (Various) + SOUTH KOREA Hwaseong HLSA, Oct 27 1249 -
Spectacular wrestling match with HLSA staying more or less on
top with the CNR1 program surfacing every few minutes - no sign of any NHK
here. (Newell, Victoria B.C.)

612 JAPAN Tokyo 100 kW JOLK, Oct 27 1248 - Taking something off a bashing
from 610 but clearly NHK1 programming parallel
to the cluster of 531, 585, 594, 666 and on... Fair in the splash. (Newell,
Victoria B.C.)

621 NORTH KOREA Hamgyong Pukdo 500 kW Pyongyang, Oct 27 1249 - Unusually
clear and strident
female Korean speaker atop a normally messy and off frequency sundae swirl
of a channel. (Newell, Victoria B.C.)

639 CHINA Multi - CNR 1, Oct 27 1250 - Solid network Chinese feed - but not
alone with some clear competition underneath - Likely Japan (Newell,
Victoria B.C.)

657 CHINA RGD + NORTH KOREA Pyongyang 1.5MW, Oct 27 1251 - Stupid good
levels at times - Cross an all-girl version of Queen
singing Korean political anthems about the honourability of farm living and
you have the soundtrack of 657 Khz - understandably Gary Debocks
favourite radio station ever. By 1412 there were hints of pot-banging
Chinese opera popping through - (Newell, Victoria B.C.)

666 JAPAN Osaka 100 kW JOBK, Oct 27 1240 (and various passes) Holding its
own // to 594 and others with NHK programming. This morning,
Sports! (Newell, Victoria B.C.)

675 VIETNAM + JAPAN, Hanoi 700 kW *ÄÃi Tiáng nÃi Viát Nam (VOV1)*, Oct 27
1332 - Easy parallel with Vietnam Kiwi WebSDR on top occasionally sharing
with the 5KW pair of NHK1 stations beneath which were playing the same
sporting events of 594 Khz et al. (Newell, Victoria B.C.)

702 CHINA / KOREA, Various - Oct 27 1253 - A solid stretch of even tempered
Korean female talking with Chinese speaking underneath - a few
possibilities - (Newell, Victoria B.C.)

711 SOUTH KOREA Sorae 500 kW HLKA KBS 1, Oct 27 1403 - Quite rare "in the
clear" passages with measured Korean dialog by OM and YL - normally
clobbered by KIRO in Seattle - this was a classic case of TP's win.
(Newell, Victoria B.C.)

720 NORTH KOREA Pyongyang 500 kW KCBS, Oct 27 1255 Korean YL talking
through a layer of mud - haven't pulled out any audio on this
channel in a few years. (Newell, Victoria B.C.)

747 JAPAN Sapporo 500 kW JOIB, Oct 27 1330 and various passes - over the
top strength w/ NHK2 programming
(Newell,Victoria, B.C.)

756 CHINA Multi - CNR 1, Oct 27 1302 - Very powerful signal this morning
with Chinese male news reader - (Newell, Victoria B.C. )

765 CHINA UNID - CNR-Multi, October 27, 1303 - Very curious to see if
anyone else got anything here - seemed Chinese speaking - but low on the
modulation - one of the few medium wave channels left with Eastern Russia
on medium-wave - always watching here. (Newell, Victoria B.C. )

774 JAPAN Akita 500 kW JOUB, Oct 27 1335 - NHK 2 programming - and loud -
(Newell, Victoria B.C.)

801 CHINA - CNR/CRI (tentative), Oct 27 1305 - YL Chinese commentary - but
had company co-channel. (Newell, Victoria B.C.)

819 NORTH KOREA Pyongyang 500 kW KCBS, Oct 27 1307 and various passes - The
DPRK was winning the battle of the Korean
chick bands this morning with markedly less dreamy David Lynchian organ
solos and more "We will, we will, farm you..." Queen meets Farm girl
electro-pop. (Newell, B.C.)

828 CHINA Heilongjiang 10 kw + JAPAN Osaka 300 kW JOBB, Oct 27 1337 - Good
but not stunning reception from Japan this
morning BUT an incessant nagging from a Chinese speaker underneath. Today
was an epic day - how does one improve on this?
(Newell, Victoria B.C.)

837 CHINA Harbin 50 kW Harbin RGD (T), Oct 27 1338 - a veritable Cobb salad
this morning along with 846 - Chinese speaking back and forth between YL-OM
at poor to fair levels and totally not alone on the Channel.
(Newell, Victoria B.C.)

846 Various, Oct 27 1339 - Near graveyard conditions with 3 to 4 stations
competing for ground - but only hints of language. (Newell, Victoria B.C.)

855 CNR 2 Various + NORTH KOREA Sangwon 500 kW Pyongyang Bangsong (tent),
Oct 27 1340 and on -
Predominantly Chinese speaking on each pass but occasional hints of Korea
by YL ranter - and notes of N. Korean violin
Electro-Prop. (Newell, Victoria B.C.)

864 CNR 2 Various + SOUTH KOREA Gangneung 100 kW HLKR KBS 1, Oct 27 1341 -
Back and forthing between Chinese
talk easy // to 855 and the occasional poppy sounding cheerful Korean
coming through.(Newell, Victoria B.C.)

873 CHINA RGD various + JAPAN Kumamoto 500 kW JOGB, Oct 27 1342 - Network
NHK programming going back and forth with "bang-a-clang"
Chinese opera snippets. I almost regret not having tape, digital or SDR
file captures of some of this - almost verging on epic
conditions. (Newell, Victoria B.C.)

891 Etc - JAPAN (T) Sendai 20 kW JOHK, Oct 27 1342 - A jumble of Korean and
Japanese - Usually one of the channels with the biggest pitched struggles
going on - Korea and others fighting it out and competing with the domestic
onslaught on 890 - (Newell Victoria B.C.)

918 RGD China (various) Oct 27 1308 - Chinese OM talk competing with some
aggressive slop from 920 - but consistently holding its own during the
morning session. (Newell, Victoria B.C.)

936 RGD China Anhui - etc - Oct 27 1309 - Quiet Chinese orchestral music
with periodic Chinese OM complete with Chinese talking underneath!
(Newell, Victoria B.C.)

945 CNR/RGD Various Oct 27 1310 - Predominant Chinese mail talk with
multi-sync echo + some different Chinese programming underneath. The East
coast DXers have Spain - we have CNR and RGD! (Newell, Victoria B.C.)

954 JAPAN Tokyo TBS JOKR Oct 27 1312-various - reliable as gravity on this
channel this morning - with no one else shouder-butting in that I could
detect. Coping well with 950 Seattle slop. (Newell, Victoria B.C.)

963 CHINA - CRI Heilongjiang 600 KW Oct 27 1314 various passes - at
completely stinky hot levels with smooth Russian banter - one of the few
spots on the dial where you can hear Russian // 1323 Khz
(Newell, Victoria B.C.)

972 KOREA (S) HLCA Haminjok Bangsong (One People) .75/1.5 MW - Seriously
louder than Ted Nugent with gentle Korean ballads and spiritual sounding
stuff - still audible beyond 1600 UTC 2 hours AFTER sunrise! Cat scratch
fever! (Newell, Victoria B.C.)

And THAT is half of my morning report - Are my eyes tired!

*RECEIVER - DRAKE R8 ANTENNAS- West and North Flag GADGETS/GIZMOS- 2 X
