Asian propagation improved pretty dramatically on the low band just prior to daybreak this morning, with decent audio from all the usual big guns and several second-tier Asians. In comparison to yesterday the high band seemed to drop off somewhat, though. without any special signals on 1593 or other frequencies.
Although a propagation check at 1030 revealed pretty anemic conditions (with only weak audio from 594) the ionosphere must have gotten some kind of a boost before 1300, since the Koreans on 603, 657 and 972 were all doing quite well about an hour prior to daybreak. The Japanese big guns were just getting untracked, with 594, 693 and 747 all building up strength. 657-Pyongyang had some pretty obnoxious peaks just prior to its 1330 "TOH," with a trace of China underneath. In a similar situation 603-HLSA's female Korean announcer was doing quite well around 1340, also with a trace of China underneath. By 1340 all the usual NHK big guns had built up strength, reaching the same level as 972 on peaks. A check of the high band at this time revealed weak signals on 1566, 1575 and 1593, all much weaker than yesterday at that time. 738-BEL2 made a modest run in the KCBS splatter just prior to 1400, but it was nothing to shout about. Probably the most interesting discovery this morning were weak Asian signals on 837 and 864 around the 1400 TOH-- as Pete Taylor had mentioned previously, 850-KHHO's IBOC is now turned off, opening up those two frequencies for DXing here in the South Sound. 864 had Asian-style time pips at the 1400 TOH, but there just wasn't enough signal for language recognition. No matter-- after the demise of KHHO's IBOC, we will be thankful anyway for two more TP-DX frequencies :-)
