Is this activity near East Coast sunset or sunrise?
DXers in eastern Canada and adjacent US states from New England to the Great Lakes area have been logging a few western China stations such as 1098 and 1521 in the early evening. The auroral zone which often absorbs such Arctic paths has to be very reduced in size.
Sunrise period receptions of eastern China don't seem to travel east of the Mississippi very often.
Long path is another animal. Ray Moore in FL got 1575 Thailand on a route that passed somewhere near or across South America. Not sure if that bears any relevance to China to northeastern US routes.
160m, though close to MW, differs in some important ways:
* Much of the time there are no competing signals on a frequency. MW typically has many layers of stations en route to a target as distant as China.
* Higher frequencies may provide somewhat more "shortwave-like" propagation.
* Despite lower power than typical MW broadcasters, efficient digital and CW modes provide superior signal-to-noise ratios than AM.

A buddy at work mentioned today that hams are working China on 160mb.
I assume I'm not the only one looking occasionally for Asians on MW from the east coast.
Anybody heard anything or seen any carriers?
