Re: [IRCA] September, 2017 Michigan BCB logs

Sorry for the rambling email, it wasn't supposed to go to the entire list. But if you feel like jumping in, go ahead! lol

Haven't eaten lunch yet - that's my excuse....

Hi Tim,

Looks good! I also like how Rob Ross's logs look.

Question:

I'm trying to get a good system in place for keeping logs. Up to now,
I've been using a spreadsheet, and a small spiral notebook. I take
initial notes in the notebook, then transfer them to the spreadsheet.
Trouble is, when I made the spreadsheet, I used two rows per entry,
which makes it impossible to sort by different fields (state,
frequency, etc).

I also like the idea of old-fashioned log sheets kept in a 3-ring
binder. Kind of like the NRC AM logbook. Maybe have a tab / separator
page for each frequency.

Are there any log sheets out there on the internet for downloading?
I've looked and can't find anything. I guess maybe I'll just make my
own, and make it how I want.

The problem with old-fashioned paper is sorting and numbering. I can
sort (have sections) by Country/State, or by Frequency, or some other
category, but how can I tell at a glance how many total logs there
are, or how many GYs I've logged, or etc? I wonder how it was done in
the "old days" before computers?

Maybe I should ask one of the old-timers....

I'm thinking more and more about putting up two DKaz antennas, and
make them reversible. One oriented E-W, the other oriented N-S. I need
to experiment more on a possible location for the E-W one that is more
permanent. (Where it's at now is in the middle of the yard, just for
testing.)

I also need to post the results of some testing I did with a LoG
(basically a square rhombic) a week ago. Better than I'd hoped! Not as
noisy as I thought it would be, and it got me some new logs in Texas,
and was generally good to the S and W. It was 140 feet per side, and
was fed on the NW corner, making it directional to the NE and SW,
which it generally was, with a deep null to the SE. I may put that out
after the last mowing, in case I don't get a permanent E-W DKaz.

I keep telling myself that some day soon I'll have a permanent antenna
setup. Who am I kidding? I love to experiment. :^)

Well that's enough rambling for now.

I'm trying out a new logging format inspired from Rob Ross (Rob, I hope you
don't mind!) Hopefully the formatting doesn't blow up after I hit the

September was a productive month thanks to a few decent au nights here.
Some deep south GY logs are represented below and a new one from
Nicaragua. 27 new logs in total for the month of September, 2017!
