That's a funny story. I noticed a similar situation in the late 80's while living in Georgia. I was listening to the signoff ancmt of WNOW-1030 in NC. At the end of the ancmt, the guy said, "Now stay tuned to 1030 and listen to WBZ from Boston." As soon as WNOW cut their carrier, WBZ faded in nicely with local news.

This may be apocryphal, but I seem to remember hearing that CKLW had a good spot in
Danbury CT ratings, because the locals would stick on the channel after
WLAD signed off at sunset.
