These teams were in the Western Hockey League (or something like that) until a couple of years ago, and if I remember were going to disbandon, but got overtures from the ECHL to merge. Being a minor league, the eastern teams make only one trip to the west and the western teams make only one trip to the east each season. Even then can you imagine making a trip from say Wheeling to Anchorage!!!!!

They're all in the EAST COAST Hockey League?  I didn't know that San Diego 
was an east coast city! Makes about as much sense as the Vancouver Canucks 
being in the NHL's East Division (which they were, as a first-year expansion 
team in 1970-71)
