Re: [IRCA] Poor Man's BFO

Isn't that a fun discovery? Summer '68, "Prague Spring" in full tilt, dx'ed w/two receivers, Zenith Transoceanic - 7/9 pin tube model - and Nova-Tech Pilot II. Neither had BFO, feature available only to rich shadowy types involved in Cold War intrigues.

Tuned Pilot II, noticed het sweep through Zenith. Wow! New vistas opened. Used method to good advantage. Easily pulled high seas calls from MS Rafaello, Michaelangelo, u.s.w. as well as mil comms. Who knows? Back then, steady hand on tuning knob, and UCC-1 demultiplexer & KW-XX cryptogear courtesy of Walker Bro's, possibly could bust 16 channel VFTG-16 broadcasts.

Using local oscillator still very useful today in pinch when most everything fails. BC-200 scanner local oscillator provides quick 'n dirty test sigs to calibrate Nova-Tech Pilot II VHF Aero band, still works great.
