I also don't like the long lists of logs. I'd bet few people will read all of a multi-page DXpedition log list.

However, it is good to be able say things like "first Ethiopian", "lowest power Japanese station I have received", or explain how the identity conclusion was reached.

While I am also one that likes writing a bit of code, it should be said that the PHP - MyQSL - HTML thing is too much for the great majority of people..

And as for "staleness" of logs/clips, it's a non-issue to me. Does it really matter whether the log is 2 months old or 6 months old or more? The value to me is that the log says what is possible. I can't recall any case (except occasional off frequency stations) where that possibility went away and was invalid due to time. If Bill hears something interesting from Grayland / Sans Souci, I take note regardless of when I see the pseudo-log on his page.

I have never found words very useful when trying to describe to someone what I’ve heard on the radio.

Since my return to the hobby in late 2008, after a 25+ year absence, I have skipped written logs completely and use a database/webpage system to present what I’ve heard - either @ home or on DXpeditions:

It’s not perfect but now that I have a ‘template’ it’s pretty easy to make a new page or add to an existing one.

It does require a little knowledge or PHP, MySQL and HTML but since ‘playing with the computer’ is part of the hobby for many of us that’s not a problem.

I hope more people go this route.  For me, it’s a lot more ‘real’ than pages upon pages of written logs. And once it’s in a database you can do all sorts of analysis that I’m sure would attract the attention of the ‘counters’ among us.
