Hi Hakan and Jim - thank you for your letter. It's certainly interesting to
hear that you have been able to receive our signal on the other side of the
globe. I can confirm that the program you heard was from our 855 am
transmitter, which is located at Dundowran near Hervey Bay in south east
Queensland. ABC Wide Bay broadcasts from 5 different transmitters,
including the one at Dundowran, another am transmitter on 855 at Eidsvold, a
local am transmitter at Gympie on 1566, and our main fm transmitter on Mt
Goonanamen on 100.1 KHz. Locally we broadcast Breakfast and Mornings
programs from 0500 - 1100 each week day morning and Saturday Breakfast from
0600 - 1100. The program you heard was networked program [hence the ABC
Local Radio Queensland brand you heard] and actually came from our studio in
Cairns in far north Queensland. You can tell that from the phone number
1300 800222, which is their talkback number available for the cost of a
local call to all listeners. Both stations are part of the ABC Local Radio
network around Queensland, which consists of 11 stations around the state.
8 of those are regional stations located in small towns or regional cities.
Several of them, such as those in Mt Isa, Longreach and Toowoomba broadcast
to areas as large as Finland.
I'm a Rotarian, and recently we hosted some wonderful people from Finland
who were part of a Group Study Exchange program. They were very friendly
and taught us a lot about your country. I think they were a bit surprised
by the size of Queensland, and by the climate, which is much warmer than
yours. Your country looks very beautiful and I'd love to visit some time.
All the best..Ross.
