Back in the 1940s, there was one radio station in St. Louis that made the
jump from a graveyard channel to a regional channel...when WIL moved from 1230
to 1430. 1230 was later reassigned to Sparta, IL (that's today's WHCO). KFUO
went from share-time with KSD (now KTRS) on 550 to a limited-time station on
850.
At night, the aforementioned stations have to protect the main stations.
For instance, KTWO has to protect Boston at night, ditto with KPNW (they have to
protect St. Louis at night; I heard KMOX under KPNW at my aunt's place in
Gresham, OR in 1985) and KBOI (protecting Chicago at night).
