Re: [IRCA] Computers and displays

I bought a 19" Sony LCD, hoping that it would not be a RF noise generator.  It generates a radically different type of noise, BUT it can be rotated with regard to my loop antenna to minimize (or sometimes negate) the noise.  Regular monitors tend to generate high-frequency whistles, similar to hets.  The LCD generates broadband noise instead.  I couldn't tell you about the laptop, because the motherboard went to meet its maker before it was installed in close proximity.  Hope this helps...

I notice some list members apparently use computers in fairly close proximity to their receivers.  I have been wondering if LCD/flat-panel displays are less noisy than CRT display.  Also, if laptops tend to be more or less noisy than desktop computers.

I'm beginning to think timed recording ability, real-time signal processing capabilities, and on-line access are worth considering the addition of a computer to my radio paraphernalia.  That raises the question of advantages between the mentioned alternatives.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
