[IRCA] WFIL/WXCT DX Test Results

A mix up on the date of the WXCT 990khz test caused many to miss out
on a great test. The original posting indicated that the test would occur
on January 9th at Midnight until 2AM.
 
I think made the mistake of thinking this meant late on the evening of Jan. 8th
(early on the 9th) but no...Ron actually mean Jan. 10th. My mistake...hope
that most of you tried again the next night and didn't miss out on the
test.
 
Now that the confusion is cleared up, here are the test
results for both stations:
 
WFIL 560khz Philadelphia, PA TEST RESULTS
 
Test began promptly at 0200, with engineer Rene Tetro reporting test progress
via the NRC E-mail list and "live" using the #mwdx IRC chat room.
 
Ray Bauernhuber almost immediately posted his reception of Morse Code
from his home in New York. Followed closely by another successful reception
by Tom Jasinski in Shorewood, IL.
 
Bob Anothny, N2SU in Clifton, NJ had the treat of listening to the Beach Boys hit,
"I Get Around" after logging both voice and code ID's. Paul Mount logged the
test in nearby Morganville, NJ, as did Saul Chernos in Toronto.
 
Vermont quickly added to the list of states receiving the test when Steve
Howe reported reception from his home in St. Albans. Dave Marthouse, N2AAM
made sure that Virginia was represented as well.
 
Others successfully logging the test included Tom Dimeo in Pennsylvania, Pat Griffith,
N0NNK from his temporary listening post in Emmitsburg, MD, Jerry Bond in Rochester, NY,
John Hunter in Rossville, GA (sweep tones made it through again!), and
Steve Francis who heard code, sweep tones, and SFX from his home in Alcoa, Tennessee.
 
Sweep tones also saved the day for Bill Dvorak in Madison, WI who had to dig through
noise from WIND. Patrick Martin in Seaside, OR also managed to hear those
sweep tones using his beverages!
 
Russ Edmunds in nearby Blue Bell, PA had no trouble hearing the test, and gave updates
on the NRC list for others. The famous Fred Vobbe heard the test complete with code,
sweep tones and those wonderful PAMS jingles from his home in Lima, OH. R.C. Watts
also had easy copy from his home in Louisville, KY,
 
Another logging from Ontario came from Neil Wolfish who logged it on a Sony 2010 with
the Radio Shack loop. He reported copy good. Others logs came in from Paul Greenspan
in Marshfield, MA, At 50 minutes into the test, Shawn Axelrod was finally able to snag
a Morse Code ID to add Winnipeg, MB to the list of logs.
 
Barry McLarnon, VE3JF found the test easy copy in Ottawa, Ontario. (But then Barry
finds everything easy copy! :) Scott Fybush in Fort Wayne had a tentative logging but
is still reviewing the tape. Les Rayburn in Central Alabama also has a tentative logging,
waiting for Rene's review of the MP3.
 
Some who were not so luck included Nick Hall-Patch who couldn't get back KARI's splatter,
Phil Bytheway in Tucson, and Steve Ponder, N5WBI struggled with local KLVI (which also
caused problems here in Alabama).. Jack Haynes in Texas also tried without success.
 
Steve Ratzlaff in Elgin, OR tried without success due to strong signals from KPQ. Morris
Sorensen in Winnipeg, MB was also disappointed due to WIND and KMON.
 
This very successful test was heard in a total of 15 states and two providences of Canada.
As always, hats off to Rene Tetro for his work and dedication to DX'ers!
 

WXCT 990khz Southington, CT TEST RESULTS
 
Jim Renfrew quickly logged sweep tones, code and voice ID's from his home in Byron, NY, followed by
Patrick Martin's logging of those sweep tones from his home in the far West, Seaside, OR. (It's become
clear to this reporter that beverages plus sweep tones equals new logs! :) Patrick reported the
code very weak during the test...but thinks he has enough on the tape for a logging. Very
nice catch indeed.
 
Steve Francis added to the log at his shack in Alcoa, TN, as did Rene Tretro from Lansdale, PA. Rene
also assisted DX'ers by reducing WNTP to the 1KW level during the test.
 
A bagpipe version of "Amazing Grace" was heard by Jim Renfrew in Byron, NY, along with reports of
code/sweep tones from Saul Chernos in Toronto, John Hunter in Rossville, GA, Greg Coniglio in
Alden, NY, Brett Saylor in Central, PA.
 
Fred Schroyer easily heard the test from his basement in Waynesburg, PA using only a Sony
7600GR. Larry Favel, N4SEA and his Icom 718 had no problem copying the code, bagpipes,
and voice ID's from his home in West Virginia.
 
Other good loggings were received from Jim E. Night in North Haven, CT, Barry McLarnon,
VE3JF in Ottawa, ON,
 
Alas, some DX'ers went home empty handed, including Bob Foxworth in Tampa, Les
Rayburn in Helena, Alabama (did log it during the previous test though...), Neil Kazaross
was also successful during the test a couple of weeks back, but couldn't pull
them out of the noise again.
 
Kevin Mesa in AZ had no joy due to heavy QRM from "Rockola" 990 in Tijuana, Mike
Baker also was out of luck in Toronto, as was Gerry Bishop in Niceville, FL.
 
Totals for the test were very respectable with six states and 1 Canadian providence
logging the test. If not for the confusion over the date, it might have been higher. My
apologies again.
 
Thanks to Ron Barnes for arranging this special DX test! It is greatly
