I have since got a better local station list than the one clipped from the newspaper that I used trying to determine what was on 980.  WHSR, Pompano Beach, only 10 miles away is the obvious culprit.  The foreign language (French at least some of the time) apparently disqualified it from the local listings.  That also, along with frequent off shore stations coming in strong here, led me to suspect something other than what is now the obvious.

A strong signal on 980 (sounded like Jamaican, I'll have to do some research on that) was splattering onto 990, forcing me to use USB and some bandwidth maneuvers to clean up the signal.
