Japan donates HF radio to tsunami victims

A total of 200 portable radios were donated to villages in the Western and 
Choiseul provinces.

The donation of radios came from Japan through the Honorary Consulate of 
Solomon Islands in Mr. Tsuguto Kitano.

Mr Kitano is in charge of the Honorary Consul of Solomon Islands in Japan 
for 17 years since 1990.

The people Japan kindly donated the 200 radios after learning the 
disastrous earthquake and tsunami that hit the Western parts of the country 
on April 02, 2007.

They tried to do what they can do and were able to contact the Honorary 
Consulate of Solomon Islands in Japan.

In Japan, there were lot of earthquakes also and the people there knew how 
miserable it was.

Many people in Japan worry about the people who were suffering from the 
earthquake and tsunami that hit these two provinces.

For that reason, the Honorary Consulate set up Disaster Council for the 
Earth and Tsunami as a gateway for the donors.

After consideration with the people concerned, they decided to supply this 
useful emergency radio in case that similar situation will occur again.

The radios were shared equally among the two provinces with 100 radios 
each.

The radio can be used for 60 minutes using AM frequency, 40 minutes using 
FM frequency, and 15 minutes of light without dry battery by just one 
minutes of rotating the handle of the built-in power generator.

It is very useful in remote places where dry cell batteries are not readily 
available. If in case a similar disaster is to happen again, the people can get 
information and warning at once from this radio.

The people of Japan are hoping that these radios will ultimately serve its 
purpose for the people of these two provinces.
