South Africa: Three New Radio Licences Issued

RADIO listeners in Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and North West provinces 
will soon have access to a new commercial radio station in each 
province following an announcement of three new licences by the 
Independent Communications Authority of SA (Icasa) yesterday.

The regulator said the secondary radio market would be boosted by 
three new stations -- Capricorn FM in Limpopo, M-power in 
Mpumalanga and Radio North-West.

The Limpopo province's consortium, Capricorn FM, was led by MSG 
Africa's Given Mkhari, who is chairman of Jupiter Drawing Room.

"Secondary markets across the country have not had a commercial 
radio player in their markets and Limpopo in particular is the fastest-
growing of these," Mkhari said.

The mostly English-language station would reach a potential 1,5-million 
people and planned to launch on September 1.

M-Power is 25% owned by AME and 50% owned by Direng 
Investments and Mbombela JV.

Direng investments is a 25% investor in both M-Power and Radio 
North-West.

Radio North-West's project manager, John Nassel-Henderson, said the 
radio station would be in a gospel format as this worked best with the 
target market.

The station would be up and running by the end of the year, he said.

M-Power's project leader, Alfie Jay, said the radio station would be 
adult-contemporary and would compete against Jacaranda FM for 
listeners in the region.

He said there was "huge potential in Mpumalanga", with a conservative 
estimate of 800000 potential listeners.
