Logs
** ALGERIA. May 29 at 0320, direct, nor into UTwente, nothing on 9700
when Ifrikya FM is supposed to be nor on 9500 at 0300-0600, per EiBi,
and HFCC with no alternates registered; so where is that? Or resting
for two sesquihours? Still nothing at 0414, 0546.

17600, May 29 at 0657, now Ifrikya FM is on and propagating across
night path, S7/S8 music; might have netted some floating English if
intuned by 0635. 0700 accurate TS and news in French starting with UN
Security Council. The SSOB by far; only other 16m significant is JBA
carrier on 17855, the China radio war at 06-07: RFA via TINIAN, CNR1
or Firedrake jammer per EiBi.

17600.000, May 29 at 1829, S9/+15 into UTwente, ending English ID,
music. No floating English rest of half hour. Grandiosely it`s `La
Voix Africaine` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** BENIN. 1566, TWR: see UNIDENTIFIED, pro-forma

** BRAZIL. 9818.8345, May 29 at 0336, JBA carrier direct, as carefully
measured on the R75 compared to WWV; so R. Nove de Julho is back.
Wolfgang Büschel also reported it a bit earlier May 29: ``9818.836 BRA
R 9 de Julho Port, S=8 -75dB in EUR 00.31 UT, S=6 in MA state`` (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CANADA. MW ND beacons: see UNIDENTIFIED [and non]: QT, YXL

** CUBA. 9790, May 29 at 0335, CRI English relay is S9+40/50 direct
with two raspy spurs approx., 9785 & 9795, impossible to pin on exact
frequencies. Something`s always wrong at RadioCuba (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** ROMANIA [and non]. 9700, May 29 at 0200, RRI opening Spanish, VG
into UTwente and into Missouri SDR, no sign at either of RHC Spanish
which has intermittently appeared here (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) See
also ALGERIA

** SAUDI ARABIA. 11935, May 29 at 1829 quickcheck, horrible buzzroar
into UTwente (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 17855, Wed May 29 at 2200, token English from SNR, S9/+10
direct and the other three detectable; opening headline is that three
more countries have recognized Palestine as a state, Ireland, Norway
and Spain for a total of 146. Israel objects to Spain. After news,
discussion about this. I daresay that`s a lot more than recognize East
Turkistan (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 11785.009, May 29 at 2159, VOT not off the air, audible
direct with IS & ID. 2212 about May 29, 1463? when Istanbul was
conquered. 2227 S9+9/15 into Maryland SDR when measured. 2238 `Sports
Panorama` by Ms Badax. 2245 ``always-by-your-side`` promo, song. 2250
``with you every hour`` promo, song. 2253 s/off again ignoring SW, on
the way out? 2254.4 IS, 2258.7* chopoff (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [non]. 17655 & 15580, May 29 at 1906, both VOA SAO TOME and
BOTSWANA with same music, into Canary Is SDR; was supposedly going to
broadcast a silly basketball game in Portuguese between 1800/1830 and
2030, in a championship series live from Rwanda, presumably if and
when an Angolan team participated. UTwente gets 15580 only; the two
SDRs in RSA get neither! and appear to be deaf wideband. 1910 hummy
Portuguese announcement about this; one team is Tigers, from Cidade do
Cabo = Cape Town. Maybe a pause in game. Soon back to game excitedly.
1918 feed starts breaking up, switch to another studio for a bit
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2244 monitoring: confirmed Tuesday
May 28 at 2332 the 2330 on SW Gold Radio, Germany, 3975.004, S9+5/15
into UTwente.

Also confirmed Tuesday May 28 at 2332 the 2330 on WRMI 9395, S9+15/25
into Missouri SDR.

Also confirmed Wednesday May 29 at 1930 on SW Gold Radio, Germany,
into UTwente, 6160.000 S9/+15; and 3975.002 S9+5.

Also confirmed Wednesday May 29 at 2100 on WBCQ 7490-, S6/S9; recheck
for measurement 7489.933, it`s in dead air, hope not during WOR.
Next:

2100 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW;
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S;
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 9395 to NNW;
1630 UT Thursday SW Gold/Radio, Germany 6160.

** U S A. Near-blackout May 29 at 1453 bandscan direct: on 31m, no
WRMIs, no WBCQ 9330, just 9980 WWCR very attenuated S4/S6. Only JBA
carriers from: 11930, 13845, 15770, 15825; WRMI 17790 at 1458 is S5
JBA. WWV reported:

(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 1130 kHz, May 29 at 0316 UT into the R75, the E/W loop gets
KWKH with very little QRM, but switching to the N/S shortwire, rock
music dominates, no doubt reactivated KLEY Wellington KS running
250-watt day power at night.

Then at 0649 UT May 29, on the NRD545 with main E/W longwire, Fox
Sports Radio no doubt KWKH mixing with music presumed KLEY and at
least one other station. KLEY not dominating at night like it used to
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. Re the 1160 unID Spanish RCC station, KCTO: Where is
Cleveland, Missouri, anyway? Not even in my Rand McNally Atlas index,
but shows in the Large Scale version as due south of Kansas City, just
barely east of the KS/MO border. If the longitude there be exactly the
same as on State Line Road in the city of KC, 94°36′26.7″W, the long.
of the site as in radio-locator.com, 94 36 28.8 W, puts it slightly on
the KANSAS side. However, pin on the Google map link puts it about
562.5 feet EAST of the border in MISSOURI! Coverage map cross for site
is right on the state line, but zooming in on one of them looks like
barely in MO. Why couldn`t MO & KS fix their border at some ``even``
longitude? Why couldn`t KCTO put its towers exactly on the state line
to further flummox us? Well, it`s a `road` even that far out of the
City, crossing circa 250th Street. Another tiny town achieves world
fame by hosting a minor radio station as its ``City of License``.

Meanwhile, more from Greg Hardison: ``Glenn: – Re UNID on 1160 kHz,
this might be the best we'll do: http://hosannachristiannetwork.com/
Hosanna Christian Network - Linked to, from MW-List under KCTO/1160
entry. Page is entirely in Spanish; page-link allegedly for Online
audio leads to an "Error 404" page. – el otro G H``

Mauno Ritola, Finland, WRTH, replies: ``Tim Hall and the other GH is
right; it carries now Radio María USA Español and MW list had last
year's info. Just listened to it via Kansas City KiwiSDR and heard the
attached ID. An update has been sent to mwlist.org and it should be up
soon with the correct links and the ID. 73, Mauno``

His clip has ID in English for KCTO plus two FMs - translators no
doubt, in Kansas City proper; net timecheck for Eastern & Central
zones only, list of stations in several states, NOT including this
one, but including on a subcarrier of 99.5 WBAI New York, which is
Pacifica!

I listened for it again May 28 circa 0645 UT: nothing but a weak KSL?
Rather than propagation, if KCTO, I think it must have been on 5 kW
day power when it was dominating. Both day and night patterns are
slightly clockwise from N/S, and theoretically without much signal
thisaway to its southwest (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED [and non]. Local line noise level worst on LW & MW, has
abated slightly, so I can at least detect some NDB carriers, but not
enough to copy IDs. Tentatively based on previous experience:

365 kHz, May 29 at 0653: most likely AA, 100 watts of Fargo ND really
in MN
346 kHz, May 29 at 0654: surely YXL, 1000 watts at Sioux Lookout,
Ontario
344 kHz, May 29 at 0655: previously, JA, 400 watts at Jaxonvil FL
332 kHz, May 29 at 0656: barely copiable, dash and QT, 1000 watts at
Thunder Bay, Ontario - if any Canadian can make it, this is it. Cannot
hear IC Wichita KS mixing on 332 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 1230 kHz, May 29 at 0647 UT, approx. 1 kHz tones lasting
7 seconds between pauses lasting 3 seconds, in graveyard pileup mix.
Suspect it`s a failed satellite feed instead of programming or
deliberate testing somewhere. Does anyone recognize this pattern? My
closest, WBBZ Ponca City OK, cannot dominate at night (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 1566 kHz, May 29 at 0330, JBA carrier into R75, on both
antennas but slightly stronger on the E/W Wellbrook loop. Toward the
end of a perfunctory JBA MW carrier search in USB upward at 9 kHz
intervals, 1 kHz below each E Hemisphere channel. Nothing at all heard
lower vs very noisy summer conditions plus my local line noise.

This has got to be TWR BENIN, which I`ve heard before much more easily
in winter. Now in summer it has an advantage to North America, lower
latitude path far from the Midnight Sun: maxes out less than 40-north
in the Atlantic just outside Washington DC where the G.C. path from
Parakou to Enid enters North America; also, 100 kW, far more power
than anything in Europe, max 1 kW! Only more than that is 10 kW from
Iran. Nothing else of any power in Africa, all per mwlist; but shows
*0345; maybe they run open carrier before sign-on.

I am reminded to check for it by this on the IRCA iogroup May 27 but
lacking a time!: ``Benin 1566 in S. Alberta --- Weak, but clear and
distinct sign-on bells/chimes from TWR Benin on 1566 last night. I am
away in Spain right now so logging into my remote via my iPhone so
file reviews not very complete. 73, Steve Ve6wz Sundre AB``

Of course, there are several more 1566s in east Asia & Pacific, but
now all in the Dayside, 25 kW or less, except 250 kW FEBC Korea South.
The only other extremely remote possibilities than Benin would be an
American accidentally 4 kHz off-frequency, or pirate deliberately as a
DX spoiler. Another time, lacking any audio, should try to DF it
and/or check remotes such as Canary Islands as early as 0330 (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)
