Glenn Hauser logs July 11-12, 2023
Thursday, July 13 2023

Logs
** CUBA. 11850, July 12 at 0332, RHC is S7/9+20 but suptorted Spanish;
15230 is S7/S9 but undermodulated; 9535 audible, weaker; but one
frequency, 11670 has VG modulation and strength. Something`s always
wrong at RHC.

6000 is the only English frequency, July 12 at 0351, S9+30/45 but
undermodulated with hum. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA [non]. 5024.9, July 12 at 0353, JBA carrier with R. Rebelde
missing. Something`s wrong at RadioCuba. R. Quillabamba, Perú, has
been reported elsewhere and elsewhen on such an offset, but this may
be a local birdie since it varies down to 5024.7 (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** EGYPT. 9884.961, July 11 at 2332, as scheduled, R. Cairo has moved
from 9899.961 by 2330 for Arabic to follow Portuguese toward South
America --- and at exactly the same -19 Hz offset, as UTWente displays
both, but modulation now is even worse, only bits at peak spikes.
There is also heavy lightning over Netherlands and this S9+30/40
bigsig is not enough to suppress it completely. Also an RTTY-like
warble. Something continues egregious in Egypt (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** MEXICO [and non]. 1670, July 12 at 0401, ``Focus está contigo``,
into EZL or love song; Sportstalk in English soon takes over, no doubt
WOZN Wisconsin. First time I`ve managed to catch XEFCR, Focus Radio,
10 kW in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, a relatively new station. With a name
like that and on the border, I was wondering if it`s ever in English.
Steve Ponder had reported it June 23 so I asked him.

``Glenn, The ID’s and announcements that I have heard over several
nights of monitoring XEFCR Focus Radio (1670 kHz) have been in
Spanish. I haven’t heard any English, which is unusual to me, since
Reynosa is not that far from McAllen and Pharr. I will continue
monitoring the frequency … Steve Ponder, N5WBI, Houston, TX`` (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. Heavy tropo on maps around Enid, so a DTV bandscan July
12 at 1544 UT: BAD signals on RF: 10, 11, 14, 17, 22, 31, 34, 36.
Still at 1620, 17 is mostly bad, occasionally 3ABN, K17JN-D, so Enid`s
only local TV signal is again being overcome by DX. Decoding well are
20 KQCW-HD, 19-1 CW for Tulsa from Muskogee - and this one has NO
extra channels, what a waste. Rabbitears shows suffix as KQCW-DT; and
RF 34, 28-1 ION, KTPX-TV Okmulgee and its panoply of seven extras. At
1650 occasional decodes on RF 34 of 41-1 KMYT-TV Tulsa (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** SINGAPORE. 12025, July 12 at 1627, BBC English relay for ME, S5/S8
direct and insufficient to copy -- on ITS FINAL DAY. Walt Salmaniw, BC
reported at 1503:

``[WOR] BBC Singapore off from tomorrow 13 July 2023 --- Listening to
12025 just before 15:00 with the BBC bells, and then an announcement
that the BBC site at Singapore is going off the air tomorrow and will
no longer be available. They gave an internet option only. Very good
into Masset, although there is a weak sounding grinding sound --
either from the transmitter (I think), or another transmitter. Walt``

Kai Ludwig, Germany replies: ``The exact wording: "We start to tell
you that from tomorrow we're closing our Singapore transmitter." So
much for the replacements effective 16 July, as still shown in the
public HFCC data.

So it could be that the very last Kranji transmission has already
started, even that the St Mary-le-Bow bells have already for the very
last time introduced a BBC transmission, or are they still inserted
anywhere else?

Anyway: The very first piece of hard evidence at all. And perhaps the
only statement from the BBC on this matter at all. Kai Ludwig``

And Kai provides this historic recording July 12, 2023, at 1459 UT:

(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 17855, Wed July 12 at 2200, token English from SNR, news and
2206 feature is ``a guided tour of the Royal Opera House in Madrid``,
a.k.a. in Spanish just `Teatro Real`. Interview with some official
about history of the building, etc., during a celebratory week. VG
S9/+15 into Maryland SDR and the other three frequencies also audible
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SUDAN SOUTH [non]. 11650, July 12 at 0330, Arabish language,
S7/S9+5 and HornofAfricish music -- yes, it`s R. Tamazuj via
MADAGASCAR just starting, to be followed by another hour of R. Dabanga
until 0530 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 11785.009, July 12 at 2200, VOT English is not off the air,
S9+35/45 into UTwente, but first I`m listening to simulSpain.
2225-2231 `Feeling Supreme/The Healing Spring` tips for breast-feeding
mothers how to avoid gassy babies. Mostly music then, except 2237
`Always By Your Side` plug; 2250 usual canned s/off; 2251.4 IS,
2253.5* off (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [non]. 7260, July 12 at 0348, VG S9+20/30, VOA Somali via
VATICAN, violating Separation Of Church And State, sked 0330-0400
only; before, during, and after that, Mongolia and East Turkistan
could also be on 7260, but by 0600 it`s only Vanuatu to be heard
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2198 monitoring: ``From: Richard

Thanks this week to John, N9JL: ``Hello Glenn, I routinely listen to
your weekly podcasts, and really enjoy them. You consistently provide
your listeners with a broad cross-section of SW and BC band related
information. In only 30 minutes I know the stations I should be tuning
for over the following several days. Please accept this small
contribution in support of your on-going efforts. 73, John, N9JL,
Lutz, EN51vm, Shorewood IL`` -- with a check to Glenn Hauser, P O Box

** U S A. 7489.930, Wed July 12 at 2130, WBCQ S7/S9 into Maryland SDR,
new program following WORLD OF RADIO -- who could ask for a better
lead-in? `Plain Old Doug Show`, brief intro, then straight novelty
Dixieland tunes, 2153 brief outro with email, 2154 into `Line Break` -
these are two survivors of `Radio Angela`, which previewed them this
way before it was decided to stop:

10:30pm-10:55pm EDT (Fridays 0230-0255 UTC):
Plain Old Doug Show
Host: Doug Feldmann (US)
Format: Doug is a long-time loyal WBCQ listener who began to try his
hand at making shows for us. Often featuring early string band music
but sometimes heads off into completely different directions.
Email: custodiandoug@aol.com

10:55pm-11:00 pm EDT (Fridays 0255-0300 UTC)
Line Break
Host: T.D. Walker (US)
Format: Poetry. T.D. Walker is the author of poetry collections and
science fiction stories as well as a shortwave radio enthusiast.
Includes selections from several other poets.
Email: qsl@linebreakshortwave.com

2130 Wed is still shown as an *available timeslot on the never
up-to-date BCQ websked. BTW, on Sunday July 9 at 2200 another ATS was
occupied by another repeat of `AAAWWW`, but Bill Tilford says he plans
to resume that hour with his two main shows, FTIOM and UBMP each once
a month:

``Beginning August 6, Julio Cesar Pereira and I will be purchasing a
shared weekly hour Sundays 6-7 pm [EDT = 22-23 UT] on 7490 (right
after Marion's Attic) - I will be taking week 1 with From the Isle of
Music and week 3 with Uncle Bill's Melting Pot, Julio weeks 2 and 4
with Ginga Brasil! Unlike 5130, 7490 does livestream (but does not
archive) on the wbcq.com website. Marion's Attic and Behavior Night
have already been on the frequency for many years as was FTIOM and
UBMP for a few. At this writing, while the shortwave press has
lamented Radio Angela's passing, there has not been a sufficient
listener groundswell to be able to have any significant leverage with
possible sponsors. Personally, I am moving on, but with good feelings
about what we did while we did it.`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 7505, July 12 at 0347, WRNO in presumed Hindi but having to
resort to English to slowly convey their Fort Worth postal address,
S9/+30. Still not running overnight, off circa 0645 recheck (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 91.5, July 12 at 2213 UT, another futile check for Es FM DX
at least accomplishes this: KSNS, Medicine Lodge KS, is now into its
sixth day of dead air as first noted July 7 but probably started
earlier (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
