Glenn Hauser logs December 18-19-20, 2022
Tuesday, December 20 2022

Logs
** CUBA. 5025, Dec 19 at 0428, R. Rebelde remains active S9/+10 but
overmodulated distorted and nothing on X2 = 10050. Still at 0740 now
S9+10/20 on 5025 only, still overmodistorted. Something`s always wrong
at RadioCuba (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 5040, Dec 19 at 0430, RHC music in Spanish is only S5/S6,
much weaker than normal. At 0739, 5040 is S8/S9 and undermodulated;
while 2 x 5040 = 10080 is S9+10/20! I keep listening on 10080, and at
0741, DX/media program `En Contacto` theme and opening: topix to be
history of the telegraph leading up to electronic communication, solar
and geomagnetic activity, and cellular phones. Telegraph started in
1832 by a Russian, they claim, but I don`t listen to the rest of it.
At this hour, of course, RHC Spanish is supposed to be off the air,
but playing back what probably aired six hours earlier. Something`s
always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 6060, Dec 19 at 0736, RHC English with S8/S9 of humbuzz only;
6165 with cleaner open carrier at S8/S9. Something`s always wrong at
RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 15140, Dec 19 at 1631, RHC is S9/+10 in suptorted Spanish.
Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** EGYPT. 9439.995, Dec 19 at 2139, no R. Cairo English into UTwente.
Nor at later chex. Something`s always amiss at Abis (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** INDONESIA [non]. 7780, Mon Dec 19 at 0803, S6/S8 WRMI relay with
music, anthem? 0804 VOI ID, but then into a song rather than ToH news.
2 am CST is far too late for me to be awake and no way I`m up for
another hour to hear this (Glen Hauser, OK, WOR)

** KIRITIMATI. 846 kHz, Dec 19 at 0742, JBA carrier from R. Kiribati;
also three other splits, see unID (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** KOREA NORTH. 11710, Dec 19 at 1642, S7/S9 of sweet EZL music: must
be VOK from that Paradise during French hour to NAm. Seems the same
but JBA on // 9435. EiBi shows CNR1 Beijing site also on 11710 long
hours including this, inconvenient if true (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** KOREA NORTH [non]. 9990, Dec 19 at 1640, Korean at S5/S7. It`s RFA
via SAIPAN at 15-19 & 21-22 per EiBi (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NIGERIA. 7255-, Dec 19 at 0735, no VON signal (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6950 USB, Dec 19 at 2354, S7/S9 of pirate music,
Xmassy? The OSOB = only station on band. 2356 misc. noises; 2359
soong, no ID circa TXoH; Dec w0 at 0005 SSTV beepery but very
repetitive unlike the usual but the standard end-of-picture beeps at
the 0009 end: then followed by a voice ID but so ``produced`` it`s
unreadable. Many reports here of Thunder Chicken Radio
https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,107021.0.html
with several previous SSTVs but this one was a cartoon drawing of T.C.
himself. Nothing more for a while and tuneout as evidently signed off
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 9690, Dec 19 at 2315, token English from REE on Monday,
S7/S9 into Maryland SDR, Amy Egan interview with Pauline --- about
funding for artists. Not the solid bigsig; somewhat weaker but
sufficient off back of ME beam on 12030; 11940 to SAm much weaker; no
signal on 11685 to Africa (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY [non]. 5960, Dec 19 at 2304, no signal from VOT English into
UTwente. Nor at 2315 when XJPBS Chinese is on instead with no
competition, also 2330, from EAST TURKISTAN, land of imperialist
ChiCom genocide against Uighurs and other Moslems (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** U S A. 13563.5 CW, Dec 19 at 1626, PCO ID over and over from HIFER
beacon in Pine, COlorado, and occasional long dashes. JBA but better
than JJBBA CW trace on 13565, no doubt K6FRC California. Also with QRM
from CODAR swirshes (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 15016 USB, Dec 19 at 1632, alfanumeric crypto message, S9+10
with self-imposed roar/whine, ending with ``44 characters, this is
Acid Rain; out`` at 1633*.

8992 USB, Dec 19 at 1635 in continuing bandscan I happen to run across
this again, S9+10 and time to copy it complete by fonetix: ``I say
again: MQFWNCVC2EJYSIXLZ7SHAS3K7LUBXA this is Acid Rain, out`` to
1636*. Possibly I mixed up letter S with figure 5 in reading my
copying; correxions welcome. But what do they really mean? EiBi calls
these ``US Air Force Messages``, 24h available, also on 4724, 11175.
The colorful tactical IDs change every day, or every hour? (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [non]. 15180, Dec 19 at 1629, `Yankee Doodle Dandy` IS at
S7/S9, 1630 opening VOA English with newscaster ``by remote`` soon
attributing something to Reuters. Aoki shows 1630-1700 M-F is via
Pinheira, SÃO TOMÉ in ``Sud`` language - I guess that means Sudanese
dialect of Arabic, but WRTH 2022 had no such listing. Rather English
as in EiBi. Strangely enough, not noticeably off-frequency! (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2169 monitoring: confirmed Sunday
December 18 at 2100 on NEXUS/IBA IRRS SW & MW, via AM Italia, 1323
kHz, S9+15/20 into nearby Noale SDR; no significant QRM.

Also confirmed UT Monday December 19 at 0030 on WRMI 7780, S8/S9
direct; fortunately back on air unlike 24 hours ago.

Also confirmed UT Monday December 19 at 0400 on WBCQ Area 51, 6160
minus 65 Hz = 6159.935, S8/9+10 into NH SDR. Next:

0130 UT Tuesday WRMI 9395 to NNW
0030 UT Wednesday WRMI 9395 to NNW
1030 UT Wednesday WRMI 5850 to NW
2200 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 9395 to NNW
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S

A noncommercial service for which financial support is appreciated.
Thanks to Ron Howard, Monterey CA, for a check on a US bank to Glenn
Hauser, P O Box 1684, Enid OK 73702, ``Am sending it to you in memory
of Brian Alexander (May 1, 1957 - Dec. 26, 2012). I once enjoyed his
many African logs. Thank you for your many excellent contributions to
our radio hobby over the decades!``

One may also contribute via PayPal, not necessarily in US funds, to:
woradio at yahoo.com (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 5130 minus 12 Hz = 5129.988, Dec 19 at 0424 into NH SDR,
WBCQ R. Angela `Concert Hall` with complete opera Fidelio by
Beethoven, has some brief intermittent 2-way QRM, lo fi, sounds like
Russian language. WBCQ signal is fading down, so switch to a Rochester
NY SDR increasing the skip distance, but does not help much, 0453 into
Shakespeare sonnet (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 9330v, Dec 19 at 1637, WBCQ-6 still not back on air this
Monday after a week off for heavy antenna maintenance, but projected
by AW to resume today, and by end of week with full frequency
flexibility at last. Altho numerous other bands and frequencies were
registered originally, currently HFCC has nothing but 9330 except for
some apparently deleted SPC Sofia relays. And FCC still has no B22
skeds up since A22!

9329.814V, Dec 19 at 2345, back on at S9/+10 but fluttery in
Brazuguese, not solid signal and wobbling slightly, also still way
off-channel (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 5085, Dec 19 at 0217, ``WRMI Legends`` here S7/S9, // 9455.
Didn`t we see this coming? 0232 DJ named Clark? promoting Xmas pixure
contest as on wtww.us and then, Xmasmx. Still on at 0428 check.
Leading up to:

WOR iog 0431 UT Dec 18: ``USA. There are teasers being aired on WRMI
Legends that 5085 kHz will be used for WRMI Legends very soon. Talk on
the Legends Facebook page suggest that tuning of the antenna and
transmitter could be achieved quickly. There is no indication as to
which transmitter would be used, or hours of transmission or what
effect this will have on other frequencies being used for WRMI
Legends, or on other programmes being transmitted by the re-tuned
transmitter. Alan Roe, Teddington, UK``

0516 UT Dec 18: ``Hi George, Can you block them from using 5085, or
would you want to? How are things going now? Glenn``

0653 UT Dec 18: ``Glenn, Our return to 5085 is set for January 15,
2023. The 5085 transmitter is in total disrepair. Modules are being
repaired. It is expected to return at 100 KW. George McClintock
12-18-2022`` and then I post his reply to the WOR iog.

WOR iog: ``There is programming on 5085 kHz right now (0107 UTC, Dec.
19). "Feliz Navidad" by José Feliciano, preceded and followed by "WRMI
Legends" identification. I was only able to see a carrier with my SDR
at my location with no audio; went to visit someone else's KiwiSDR to
hear what I described above. Things are going to get awkward if WRMI
and the revived WTWW both intend to use this frequency at the same
time … 73, Ricky Leong, Calgary, Alberta, Canada``

``Thanks, Ricky for the heads up. 5085 with S9+10 signal into Masset,
BC at 02:58 UTC tune-in. Classic WTWW programming. So, presumably,
this is via a transmitter in Okeechobee? 73, Walt`` Salmaniw

0315 UT Dec 19: ``5085 apparently ex-4980 missing which was on 160
antenna like 9955, hardly ideal for inside NAm. This 5085 is much
weaker here than the real WTWW was. // much stronger 9455. Glenn``

0318 UT Dec 19: ``Glenn, of course, is correct. Gave a WRMI ID at
03:00. I agree that the signal was less by 10 to 20 dB compared to the
"real" WWTW. 9455's signal into Masset is also very nice. Walt``

George McClintock of the real WTWW called me UT Dec 20 about 0030 to
tell me that he has got 5085 back on the air already, testing with PPP
audio at about 70 kW. He says WRMI can keep on 5085 tonight and
tomorrow night, but WTWW takes over from Wed night = UT Thu Dec 22,
also daytime on 9475, from #2 transmitter, and will stay on rather
than waiting until Jan 15. New modulator cards to be delivered 12/21.
Lots of them in #1 were burned up. Computers are also a mess, Ted
refusing to supply passwords or cooperate otherwise. #1 will be
activated later but #3 may not be restorable. He leaves it on a few
minutes longer for me to check:

Yes, PPP on 5085 blasting in here as before peaking 40 over 9 until
cut off at 0038.6* UT. Also detectable were the +/- circa 13 kHz
parasite spur carriers just barely audible about 5072 & 5098 like
before. No sign of RMI yet on 5085 or 4980 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 7570, 7730, 7780, Dec 19 at 0732 check, all three WRMIs are
on // with TOM but not BS voice right now (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 9980, Dec 19 at 1640 and 1946 chex, WWCR-4 is OFF, TOMBS
frequency; others normal at 1946, 12160, 13845, 15825. By next check
2352, 9980 is back on blasting BS at S9+30/40 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** VANUATU. 7260, Dec 19 at 0734, RV still here, JBA S5/S7, not on
7890 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. Trans-Atlantic JBA split MW carrier search, Dec 19 at
0752: besides TP 846 Kiritimati, likely sources: 882 Canary Island or
Spain; 1215 UK; 711 Western Sahara (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 7612-USB, VP Dec 19 at 1624, 2-way in colloquial
Spanish, cambio (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
