Glenn Hauser logs December 11-12, 2022
Tuesday, December 13 2022

Hauser
** CHINA [and non]. 11590, Dec 12 at 1607, Firedragon jamming mixing
with Chinese talk adding up to S8/S9; i.e., against R Free Asia in
Mandarin via TINIAN at 1600-1900 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 5990, Dec 12 at 0730, S9+40 of dead air except for humbuzz.
Got to be the transmitter supposed to run only at 23-01 UT for CRI
relays in English, Spanish. Something`s always wrong at RadioCuba. No
other Cubans on air on 5, 6, 10 or 11 MHz bands. The Other Side:

``How is judicial independence trampled on and controlled in Cuba?
DIARIO DE CUBA spoke to former Cuban judge Edel García about how
judicial independence is violated on the island and how the principle
of 'equality before the law' is violated.
José Luis Reyes, Madrid 09 Dic 2022 - 19:12 CET

Why in Cuba are the judicial cases of political prisoners such as José
Daniel Ferrer, leader of the dissenting Patriotic Union of Cuba
(UNPACU); rapper and activist Maikel Castillo "Osorbo," and Luis
Manuel Otero Alcántara, artivist and a leader of the San Isidro
Movement, dealt with "from above?" What does it mean that, in the
proceedings against such high-profile figures, judicial action is a
pure formality, given that their imprisonment had been decided before
their cases were ever submitted to the regime's courts?``...

(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** EGYPT. 9439.995, Dec 12 at 2233, no signal in English from R. Cairo
into UTwente (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** KIRITIMATI. 846 kHz, Dec 12 at 0731, JBA carrier from R. Kiribati
is the only 9/kHz split audible (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NIGERIA. 7255-, Dec 12 at 0728, no signal from VON (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 255 MCW kHz, Dec 12 at 0743 & 1545, SW, ND beacon at
StillWater, is off again after several weeks reliably on whenever
checked, day or night (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 90.1, KUCO-FM: just as I feared, now that we are into
weekday programming, Monday Dec 12, before 16 UT and after 18 UT
whenever checked, we are no longer hearing the once-familiar voices of
local classical announcers. The ``upgrade`` means outsourcing the
DJing and most of the classical music programming. Don`t get me wrong:
I have no complaints about the quality of music programming and
announcing from elsewhere, but it`s a shame KUCO is giving up its
identity.

At a 1902-1904 UT break, however, Curt Timmons is still to be heard
with local weather for OKC as well as the satellites in McAlester,
Woodward. But then it`s back to ``Classical 24`` rather than his own
presentation. His title is ``Announcement Coord``. He does the same at
2002-2004 UT. But at 2004.5, `Birdnotes` appears, upcut. These may be
the spots for more modules now. No module in the 21 UT ToH newshole,
but at 2103 local Kent Anderson introduces some Chopin --- so at least
this hour it`s back to KUCO origination? All very confusing. No, that
was a brief interlude. By 2107 it`s back to C24 with something else.

Classical 24 originates with Minnesota Public Radio, not WFMT Chicago,
tho I am sure I heard Peter van de Graaff, an announcer on WFMT`s
Beethoven Satellite Network last week. Maybe KUCO is using both, or
experimenting with both at the outset? Both of these try to sound
``local`` by being generic without ever mentioning their network! It
appears that KUCO`s multi-thousand CD library is now largely
redundant. See Wikipedia for more about Classical 24, including
dismissing its only Black announcer for what he did after George
Floyd`s murder by Minneapolis police.

My initial impression of C24 is that it tends to play more shorter
pieces, which allows plenty of breaks for `underwriting` commercials
and promos. The weekday 3-5 pm bloc on KUCO used to accommodate some
longer symphonies, etc. by not taking a break for anything at 4 pm.
Not any more: after weather, Kent again gets to play only a snippet of
Chopin fill music before back to net. KUCO DJs have plenty of
experience with back-timing: fade up some music in progress so it will
end just before a net join, as that is less jarring than starting at
the beginning and having to fade it out. But some of the transitions
are still abrupt.

We are still awaiting info on resumption/rescheduling of several
``modular`` few-minute programs on KUCO which no longer fit into the
clock, such as `StarDate`. Its own website provides free transcripts,
but there is a price for hearing them unless a day later:
https://stardate.org/radio/listen
No doubt we could track down some other webcasting stations with
StarDate at regular times. Own list shows 7 AM & PM daily on one other
Okie, KGOU/KROU. KUCO never ran it on Sat/Sun, as if the Universe
grind to a halt on American human weekends.

For `A Day to Remember` we have to go to disgraced FB for update, also
transcripts and illos not on the radio:
https://www.facebook.com/ADayToRememberRadio/

``A Day To Remember - Radio 2h · Greetings ADTR friends and fans! If
you listen to the broadcast over the air on KUCO, there are a couple
of schedule changes to note: the morning broadcast moves up five
minutes, from 8:06 to 8:01 am. The afternoon show will now air at 5:01
pm rather than 3:01 [sic: it was 3:06]. Thanks for listening!`` It`s
sort of like Paul Harvey`s TROTS = The Rest of the Story, leading up
to a big reveal at the end. Heard more like 2302 UT Dec 12; spoiler
alert: the first mo/tël! KUCO also used to air BBC news at certain
hours, but no longer? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. RF 17, Dec 12 at 1706 past 2400 UT, NO signal from
K17JN-D, the 3ABN translator and Enid`s only local TV transmitter.
Isn`t that unusual for a city of 50K, 100 km away from nearest major
market? Was still on nominally as recently as yesterday with multiple
TV and audio substations. No storming as an excuse for outage. No
doubt it`s unpersonned, and may take a while for HQ to become aware
and get a contract engineer out to fix it. Info re:

https://rabbitears.info/market.php?request=station_search&callsign=K17JN
The other Enid station, on ch 32 at precisely the same geo
coöordinates as 17, is imaginary (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** PANAMA [and non]. 7193 LSB, Dec 12 at 0722, ``Triple H Net``, first
from K9RM, then KJ6MS with a long list of instruxions on how to
participate correctly; apparently building up WAS contacts is its
purpose. Finally HP3EFS, Mingo is allowed to make contacts. Here`s all
about it:
http://www.hhhnet.net/
not explaining where the HHH come from. The net itself issues award
certificates.

KJ6MS USA flag USA

** SPAIN. 9690, Mon Dec 12 at 2309, tokEnglish from REE, main feature
by Justin Coe is interview about a new produxion in Madrid of
Bellini`s opera `La Sonnambula`, 13 performances until January 6. 2324
more Mundial nonsense about some Spanish player. VG into Maryland so
not even checking the other three or direct; but by 2348 in French,
9690 fading down considerably. Still no DX/mailbag program for months
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY [and non]. 5960.002, Dec 12 at 2300, VOT S9+30 into UTwente
but CCCCCCI already undergoing by 2305. After SPAIN, tuned over to
here at 2325 as `New Day, New Choices` is ending, right into next
segment with back-to-back themes, `Did You Know That?` about the first
medical school ever, 700 BCE in Anatolia; briefly, and later, music.
2353 sign-off with jumbled but correct English schedule, 2355 only
first few notes of IS before chopped off with no finesse, uncovering
XJPBS ChiCom achieving S9/+10 all by itself but noisy on 5960.001
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** UKRAINE. I have not tried to hear `Ukraine: Security Issue` for
some time via website, but as of Dec 12 it stops at Dec 1 - what now?
http://www.nrcu.gov.ua/ua_security_issue
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 13565 CW, Dec 12 at 1508, K6FRC ID over and over is JJBBA,
the allegedly only 1.8 milliwatt HIFER beacon in CA, occasionally
making it here and always in the mornings (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2168 monitoring: confirmed Sunday
December 11 at 2100 on IRRS SW via AM Italia, 1323 kHz only, S7/S9
into nearby Noale SDR, very little CCI; following at 2058 some
Horn-of-Africa? music, unreadable announcement chopped off for 2100
ID, WOR.

Also confirmed UT Monday December 12 at 0030 on WRMI 7780, S9+10 into
Maurice LA SDR, S7/S8 into Maryland.

Also confirmed UT Monday December 12 from 0404 on WBCQ Area 51, 6160
minus 52 Hz = 6159.948, S9 into Missouri SDR after JL ran late before
he ``gotta go`` at 0403. ACI splash from 6165 Cuba worse on NH SDR. S9
direct and measured 6159.939. Next:

0130 UT Tuesday WRMI 9395 to NNW
2330 UT Tuesday WRMI 9955 to SSE [jammed by Cuba]
0030 UT Wednesday WRMI 9395 to NNW
1030 UT Wednesday WRMI 5850 to NW
2200 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 9395 to NNW

** U S A. 15770, Sun Dec 11 at 2113, `TYROT`, over and over in
different versions, mostly vocal, i.e. `The Yellow Rose of Texas` as a
propagation experiment for Europe by Texas Radio Shortwave via WRMI.
This was supposed to start last Sunday and repeat Dec 18 & 25. It`s
S9+10 but hardly a solid bigsig here off the side of the 44 degree
azimuth, as ever with this WRMI frequency. Includes announcements and
even breaks for SSTV beepery at 2119.6 and 2134. Terry Colgan said
there would be 23 versions during the 21-22 hour, and a special eQSL
available. If I listened to the whole hour, feared the otherwise nice
tune might become engraved in my brain (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 9955, Mon Dec 12 at 1552, WRMI-3 is off again unlike
weekends, so bad news for 1530 DX/media program strip: Mon Wavescan,
Tue Shortwave Radiogram, Wed Hobart Radio International, Thu
Frecuencia al Dia, Fri World of Radio -- except Wavescan with a
tridozen other times, not so many for the rest (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** VANUATU. 7260, Dec 12 at 0728, JBA carrier from R Vanuatu still
here and no harmonix of 3945 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

This report dispatched at 0043 UT December 13
