** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98 RC USB, Thursday Oct 20 at *1430 LRA36 cuts on
during song exactly as scheduled for special station anniversary
broadcast; good into Argentine remote. 1433 lyric during song sounds
like ``voy a buscar una señal``, or am I imagining? 1434.5 cut to
standard sign-on procedure; 1536 theme song; 1540 recitation this time
mentioning 43rd anniversary, ``una historia con futuro``; 1441.5
music; 1446 ID ``su cía``, and into live chat among YLs, even more
excited than usual, for the 27th program of the season; 1448 mention
Adrián Korol, head of RAE; 1453 geo coords of base; clima: +1 C, winds
of 32 or 55 kph? sunset around 20 local; 1456.5 phone and other
contact info; recorded voices with greetings, seem to be mostly
officials rather than listeners, but first one never identified; 1502
frequencies as 15476 and ``97.6`` -- even she can mix up the digits
instead of 96.7. 1503 we hear Korol; 1507 song; 1510 historia: from
1978 first radio was on met frequencies; Sept 1979 an icebreaker from
Bs. As. brought broadcast equipment to base; antenna up and first on
air Oct. 20; ID recording mentioning original frequency 6030; then a
long phone conversation with Juan Carlos ---, the first announcer as
he fondly recollects; still going enthusiastically at 1525 until 1530,
then the first song they played in 1979, a milonga; 1535 more chat,
but 1537* cut off amid talk and never to return, altho planned to run
until 1630. This is how it often happens even on ordinary days. Wonder
if this will repeat Saturday or of Wednesday`s (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** CUBA. 5025 & 5040, Oct 20 at 0615, Rebelde and RHC are off; on 6
MHz band: only RHC English 6060 undermodulated, and 6165 just barely
modulated. Something`s alwys wrong at RadioCuba/RHC. The Other Side:

``Policy --- Is Cuba a failed state or not? DIARIO DE CUBA spoke to
three experts on the categorization that the regime does not want to
acknowledge, as it would mean accepting that a historical process has
failed. --- José Luis Reyes, La Habana 17 Oct 2022 - 16:26 CEST
Cubans in line in Havana. DIARIO DE CUBA [caption]

In the wake of the disaster wrought by Hurricane Ian in western Cuba,
the first secretary of the Communist Party in Havana, Luis Antonio
Torres Iríbar, gave a speech in which he sought to refute the growing
perception on social media and outside the country that the regime on
the island is a "failed state."``...

** KIRITIMATI [and non]. 846, Oct 20 at 0634, no signal from R.
Kiribati, but this is Thursday. It may be erratic; Bruce Portzer noted
from his Grayland WA DXpedition circa Oct 12 mainly logging Kiribati
on 1440, ``I was surprised to discover that the other Kiribati
station, Kiritimati 846, was carrying separate programming and signed
off at 0730z. Bruce in Seattle``.

While 846 was inaudible here, Oct 20 at 0635+, I did have JBA TA
carriers on 855, 882, 774, 711, 612, presumably, Spain, Canary,
Morocco (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NIGERIA. 7255-, Oct 20 at 0618, no signal from VON. I wonder if the
flooding around Abuja affects this. SW sites, of course, should be
built on high ground. Also no signal into Canary SDR at 1825 (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 5010, Oct 20 at 0615, this WRMI is off, rather than
extended. So are all other 5 & 7 MHz channels: 5800, 5850, 5950, 7570,
7730, 7780. At 0620, 9455 is splattering again down to 9420. But the
latest from WRMI at 1539 UT Oct 20:

``5850 kHz back on the air --- The repairs on 5850 kHz have been
finished, and we tested it on the air at 1445 UTC today, October 20.
It's off at the moment, but it will come on at its normal sign-on time
of 2200 UTC this evening. We know that a lot of listeners in central
and western North America will be happy to hear this.

We will continue to work on 7570 and 7780 kHz in the coming days as we
make more repairs to those transmission lines that were damaged by
Hurricane Ian. Thank you again for all of your messages of support.
