Cuba radio silence amid electric grid failure due to Hurricane Ian

HCDX

re: To Black Cat Yankee - re 'peddle faster'

A little more respect for life's work and age could also be expected from
W3HFU fellow.

re RadioCuba Broadcasts and technical Installations,

despite everything, you have to admire the dictatorship executors there,
how they still use like exUSSR relay Bejucal site from the 70s with modest
means, the newer Chinese installations in the new Chinese plants
at Bauta are not doing too badly either, and the CRI Relay in Quivican
is still using the audio-feeders of the better two transmitters #1 and #5.

Glenn is already right in his judgement of the RHC / Rebelde broadcasts,
the often low-level modulation on some days is also due to a lottery game,
which interference-ridden feeder line between the radio broadcast
house in the capital and the broadcasting centre in the is used low wide
landscape.

comment on RHC service of April 2019

I got to visit RHC in 2016 and saw with my own eyes how primitive of an
operation things are (i.e. they are still using typewriters for much of
the postal correspondence with listeners). The fact that RHC, Radio
Progreso and Radio Rebelde are able to successfully transmit at all in
light of the embargo (which blocks Cuba from getting even repair parts for
their transmitters without working through third countries) is a wonder
and a testament to the tenacity of the Cuban radio.

Obviously not all of the problems at RHC can be blamed on the embargo, of
course, but I prefer their programming to the overwhelming majority of
what is being aired on SW these days. Certainly much better than VOA and
Radio Marti.

Mail of November 2019, of further Bejucal plans:

We are exploring the possibility of starting an old transmitter on around
3300 kiloHertz, 90 meters band... with simple non directional antenna,
similar to the 60 meters tropical band antenna.

Last e-mail: Since autumn 2019 in a wheelchair after a serious operation.

I am tied to a nice wheel chair ... can walk a few steps only and with
pain, but can work very well and tutor my students at the post graduate
level.

re Prof. Arnaldo Coro Antich
CO2KK my ham radio station covers from 160 meters to 70 centimeters,
but the power is limited to 5 Watts, using CW. SSB and digital modes...

His responsibility for the Cuban shortwave radio
now came to an end in life - in May 2020.

Last Arnie radio matter e-mail received here in Europe in July 2020.

The re-erection of an old exUSSR 50kW SW 'sweetheart' for the mx station
Radio Progreso on the frequency 4765 kHz in Bejucal was its last
recognisable achievement for the international shortwave audience.

Thank You Arnie.

I was able to weakly hear the Cuban jammer on 6030 against Radio Marti
earlier, but it is gone now. Arnie needs to peddle faster on his bicycle
generator.

still no main power at BAU, BEJ, or QUI sites
or
as a precaution to avoid antenna and feeder line damage,
no SW transmission is on air at present by RHC during hurricane.

No 5025 nor 5040 kHz outlets on air either.
