Glenn Hauser logs February 28-March 1-2, 2022
Wednesday, March 02 2022

Logs
** AZORES. 6114, March 1 at 0732, RTTY INTRUDER stronger than last
time, and it might complain of QRM from 6115 Radio Nikkei, Japan, tsk2
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 15230, March 1 at 1527, RHC is S9 but JBM vs much stronger //
S9+20 15140 sufficiently modulated but with squeal. Something`s always
wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** EGYPT. 9899.608+, Feb 28 at 2112, R. Cairo is S9+30 into UTwente
with extremely distorted music. Something`s always egregious in
Egypt.

9899.608v wavering slightly plus and minus by hundredths of Hertz,
March 1 at *2114.5, carrier on from R. Cairo after nothing at 2111
when there were 2390 users at UTwente; 2115 timesignal is loud and
clear, but then talk and music at S9+40 is suptorted; still totally
unusable (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** ITALY [and non]. Glenn Hauser wrote on 28/02/2022 01:28:

Alfredo, The last two Fridays there was no signal on 7290, and now I
see that 7290 has been removed from your program schedule - the days I
can see, as Thu, Sat and Sun will not load. Can you confirm that 7290
is permanently canceled; and there will not be any IRRS SW broadcasts
of WOR or any of the other media programs? Meanwhile 1323 seems to be
doing well at least to the nearby remote -- except during the 19-20 UT
hour when interference from Romania in German is considerable. And in
Hungarian before 1900. Glenn``

Alfredo Cotroneo of IRRS replied March 1: ``Hi Glenn, We focused more
on raising power on MW 1323 kHz lately to cover Ukraine, eastern
Russia and Belarus (besides the rest of Central and Northern Europe).
I confirm our commitment on 7290 kHz Shortwave for one hour in the
evening from 20-21 CET. Our program schedule had been adjusted
slightly to allow new programs from 19-23:10 (approx) CET and added
more news coverage on 1323 kHz. We may have to move WOR slightly as
airtime is filling up due to special programs beamed to the new war
zone, regretfully. Will update you on this. Also check:
https://www.nexus.org/humanitarian-radio-broadcasting-at-the-time-of-the-ukrainian-war/
Best 73s. Alfredo``

I see that 7290 has been re-inserted into the program sked at 19-20 UT
only, at least on the visible days, along with 1323 on a longer span.
Let`s hear if 7290 be axually on air today. And go to the link about
IRRS` power increase --- never specified -- on 1323; but WRTH 2022
showed it originally only 5/1 kW. ``Beamed to the war zone`` -- does
that mean a direxional antenna?

Got to UTwente just in time March 1 at 1957 when there were 2797
users, and on 7290 heard a bit of an Irish song before it froze up.
Off the air by the time I got it back but that must have been IRRS
reactivated via Bulgaria. Later checking 1323 kHz via nearby Noale
SDR, at 2038 closing TUC Radio, maybe their latest podcast about
Ukraine crisis:
https://tucradio.org/section/podcasts/newest-podcasts/
then `Power Minute` of gospel-huxtering. At 2059 someshow cut off, ID,
2100 `Feature Story News` and `UN News`

BTW with so many users on UTwente now, some are constantly going and
coming, so if you don`t hook up at first, or lose it, chances are good
of getting back on if you keep refreshing sooner rather than later,
the max now unknown but keeps expanding? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY [and non]. 5960, March 1 circa 2300, no signal here from VOT
on the DX-398 with clipon, but maybe on the air. At 2358, UTwente is
still getting it S9+30 with IS and German ID, so here we go again
since something`s always erroneous at Emirler: 2400 timesignal and
opening spurious German atop the CCCCCCI; only the latter at 0014
recheck March 2, CNR1 via PBS Xinjiang, East Turkistan, land of
imperialist ChiCom genocide against Uyghurs and other Moslems (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 11720, Feb 28 at 2105, VOA is still playing music over its
only active English frequency from Grimesland, Soul on Mondays, rather
than `Flashpoint Ukraine`. It`s reported only on VOA regular English
webcast, presumably of no interest to Africans! (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2127 monitoring: confirmed UT Tuesday March 1
at 0130 on WRMI 9395, S9+10 into Minneapolis SDR; still holding to
that level at 0155.

Also confirmed Tuesday March 1 at 2330 on WRMI 9955, S9+10/20 direct.
Next:

1030 UT Wednesday WRMI 5850 to NW
2200 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW

** U S A. Re my comments about WBCQ 4790 and the new Radio Angela,
Bill Tilford responds:

While I dislike the CODAR issue more than anyone, I'm not sure I
otherwise agree with the notion of 4790 being WBCQ's worst frequency
in terms of coverage reach. Both in tests and the first night's
official broadcast, 4790 has terrestrially outperformed 7490 in parts
of the midwestern US and clobbered it in Europe, where 4790 will often
arrive in parts of Eastern Europe as a quite listenable breakfast show
as well as the US and Canada. Yes, there are local bad zones, but that
is true with many frequencies. As to Latin America, we'll see what
coming months bring (or not). 7490's secret weapon has been its
webcasts, which in the context of this discussion don't count, along
with its somewhat better reach out west and down south. As a
transatlantic frequency, 4790 appears to be the better option, azimuth
notwithstanding.

As to Encore, our own schedule was not for the purpose of stealing
listeners from it - I respect and enjoy that program myself. But it
does have multiple repeats throughout the week (unlike WBCQ Concert
Hall, which plays once) with the same remote web sdr possibilities
that some of our listeners will need to use to bring in Radio Angela's
programs. There are miscellaneous reasons, some related to production
schedules, why the other programs in the RA schedule are pencilled in
where they are, and for now Sunday is what makes sense for WBCQ
Concert Hall. We are also doing longer-form works (whole operas and
symphonies) than Encore due to the luxury of a two hour slot, so it's
not really the same material. Whether that works to our advantage or
Encore's at any point in time will depend upon a listener's mood and
preferences. Hopefully we will both thrive. And, for those on the
horns of a dilemma, there are, as mentioned, recorders. Since neither
program is pay-per-listen, let us instead be happy that this much
classical is back on the airwaves between the two. A much better
problem to have than "gee, there's nothing on..."

The WBCQ.com website has historically taken its time for updates, for
those with access to Facebook, the WBCQ The Planet Facebook page has
the full published schedule.`` (via WOR iog via Glenn Hauser)

** U S A. (7490v), UT Tue March 1 at 0030, WBCQ webcast after secret
semirepeat of UBMP, theme sounder of `Camp Constitution Radio`, then
commercial for IBM.com! before body of CCR. Amazing that IBM would
sponsor that; possibly random adsertion somewhere up the line (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)
