** CUBA. 6165, May 9 at 0611, this is the only RHC English still on; the other four are off. So what becomes of Esperanto at 0700 Sunday only? Nominally it`s appended on 6100, not 6165. Would they turn 6100 back on? Something`s always wrong at RHC. Ivo Ivanov reports about 6165 instead of 6100: ``And today respectively no broadcast of RHC in Esperanto at 0700 UT. Very good signal via SDR Half Moon Bay, CA, USA. Something`s always wrong at Radio Habana Cuba Bauta transmitter center!!`` After 1500, Esperanto confirmed on usual 11760 & 15140 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** CUBA. 15140, May 9 at 1901, RHC English opening on this only; missed checking on May 8 or 7 since May 6 was missing from both frequencies as 15370 had been alone on May 3. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK,, WOR) ** NIGERIA. 7255-, May 9 at 0614, VON is gone again (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** OKLAHOMA [and non]. 1390, Sunday May 9 at 0622 UT, my closest local, KCRC, is S9+70 of dead air on the R75, very unusual. Must have lost sports satellite feed and no one awake to fix it. I switch to the DX-398 so I can get a sharp null, allowing a pileup of other signals to audiblize. I stay with it past 0642 but can`t ID anything. At first there was a local weather break from somewhere; dominant signal with soul song which seemed to go on forever without a break. No clear candidates in NRC AM Log listings. There are 1390s in all adjacent states, mostly with peanut-powers at night. In Chicago there is WGRB, UC/GOS format, 5/5 kW but both day and night patterns throw to the north, and my null of KCRC favors NW/SE. Maybe the dead air will rehappen late at night (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR) ** U S A. 13565, May 9 at 1408, HIFER beacon K6FRC is JBA with call over and over, another rare but allegedly significant logging due to its publicized power of only 1.8 milliwatts (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. Re Armed Forces Day as May 8: NOT really; timeanddate.com says: ``Many Americans celebrate Armed Forces Day annually on the third Saturday of May. It is a day to pay tribute to men and women who serve the United States’ armed forces. Armed Forces Day is also part of Armed Forces Week, which begins on the second Saturday of May.`` Apparently it derives from the merger of all armed forces into the Department of Defense in 1949 under Truman, but significance of the axual day/week is unclear, if any. A few years ago, the crossband ham radio event was moved a week earlier just to avoid conflicting with the so-called Dayton Hamvention, which was canceled both this year and last year for obvious reasons. There would be little point in making it a virtual event as hams can continue usual ``virtual`` contacts on the air. Next year 2022 it`s planned for May 20-21-22 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A [and non].
