Glenn Hauser logs June 12-13, 2020

Hauser
** MEXICO. The 6m DXMAP shows an MUF spike to 106 MHz somewhere south
of here, so altho most spots are much lower, I figure it`s worth
trying for a decent sporadic E FM DX session, and so it is, the first
here this ``summer`` since mid-April. Altho it`s pretty hot in the
car, at least it`s not in the sun, so the Nissan stock radio is
primary, with the DX-398 secondary, antenna out the window. The latter
has RDS but none of the DX signals are strong/stable enough to decode
if any, but at least I can keep track of two frequencies at a time.

This starts UT Sat June 13 at 0028. I try <92 MHz first, but nothing
makes it thru all the ACI or CCI. I might miss some US stations, but
q.v. a few, as I`m alert for frequencies speaking Spanish. All these
from my notes on my receivers in real time, no remotes, and no
recordings.

Prime reference source, the WTFDA FM Radio Station Database. Distances
city-to-city, not exact coords, distancefromto.net

0028, 93.3 Spanish, ``La Banda 93``, caller on phone then music, and
soon super-hype voice actor (SHVA) as ``La Nueva`` with no further
numbers. One or both non-IDs? The latter gets one hit:
``XHPNVO-FM 93.3 EL SALTO DGO MEX 6.0 kW 101.2 m 23-46-42 105-21-37
Spanish HD GRUPERA LA NUEVA 93.3``. 1575 km = 979 stmi

0030, 93.5, Spanish talk, VG but no RDS; advice show mentions ``las
bubis``

0033, 95.3, Spanish music mixing with KOKC translator - which really
gets out 100 km from a tall tower

0033, 97.3, PSA about Corona Virus in Spanish and a segment in an
Indigenous language; ``radio y televisión mexicana --- contigo``. Then
repeating phone number 4-12-13-14, in Udalá (?). Nothing fits in the
db, but there are about 4 stations in the northern tier of states. The
MUF in this opening.

0035, 93.1, Spanish ID as ``Hits FM 93.1`` and ad for algo on Canal 6;
0037 ID again, PSA about CV cuarentena from the Cámara de Diputados;
0039 ID as XHCTO, Torreón, Coahuila, and a third Hits non-ID. 0046,
``Habla Corazón``, from same station? program name? 0049 announcer
asks for reports (not DX, I assume), acknowledges listeners in Parral,
León, Torreón. Listed as:
``XHCTO-FM 93.1 TORREÓN COAH MEX 38.56 kW 208.0 m 25-31-29 103-27-19
Spanish SPANISH TEEN HITS - JUVENIL HITS FM``. 1304 km = 810 stmi

0040, 92.9, ad for Colegio España, ``92.9 España FM, definiendo la
nueva cultura``, about UNIS(?), ``estamos en tu cabeza``, Viz.:
``XHUNES-FM 92.9 DURANGO DGO MEX 10.0 kW 54.0 m 24-02-53 104-37-47
Spanish ESPAÑA FM College ESPAÑA FM Universidad España``. 1521 km =
945 stmi

0048, 92.1, Spanish rap mixing with norteña music

0051, 92.3, music and Spanish ID? missed; 0055 TC for 7,55 and temp 33
grados, music; time means it`s here in the CDT zone, not PDT, so
distinct from what I hear next; see Durango below later on 92.3.

0057 ``La Bestia 92.3``, Diputados PSA, CCI, then ToH ID as XHMMF,
Mexicali, Baja California. 0103 ``la mula blanca``, apparently not the
name of a different station. Viz.:
``XHMMF-FM 92.3 MEXICALI BC MEX 21.9 kW 48.08m 32-38-18 115-38-17
Spanish SPANISH HITS BALADAS LA BESTIA GRUPERA``. 1637 km = 1017 stmi

Had to run inside for another logbook, so resuming after a break:

0118, 92.3, ``Caliente`` slogan, Spanish music, CCI in Spanish and
English(Kansas?). Viz. one hit and in the PTA = probable target area:
``XHTRR-FM 92.3 TORREÓN COAH MEX 15.0 kW 208.0m 25-31-29 103-27-19
Spanish CALIENTE REGIONAL MEXICAN LA CALIENTE``. 1304 km = 810 stmi

0119, 92.7, romantic music in Spanish

0122, 96.5, romantic music in Spanish above the Okies, soon f/out

0125, 90.7, romantic music in Spanish, too much ACI both sides

0128, 93.1, Spanish music, 0129 DJ with advice like 93.5 earlier.
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) See also USA for same opening

** SPAIN. 9690, June 12 at 2200, REE English this Friday has Alison
Hughes discussing the economic consequences of COVID-19 in Spain, and
still at 2226 check, so no music fill? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 9830, June 12 at 2200 and still 2226, no signal in English
from VOT; something`s always erroneous at Emirler (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** U S A. 28224.4-CW, June 12 at 2151, K5GJR/B JBA over and over from
this beacon, only signal I`m getting on a quick 10mb scan during
sporadic E opening. A K5 must be fairly close. Here he is, from
https://www.qrz.com/lookup/k5gjr/b

``K5GJR USA flag USA Primary only for: K5GJR/B

Hello All, I'm active on most bands 160-70cm's. I have a 10mtr beacon

putting out 2.5 watts, using a Pico keyer kit I assembled, into a
Antron A-99 vertical antenna at 40'... 73s Randy k5gjr`` CC is 957 km
= 595 statute miles from Enid. Far enough for many logs of TV KIII-3
and KRIS-6 back in the analog era (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 9330, June 12 at 1848, no signal here from WBCQ-6, off, or
500 kW WLCR just not propagating? 1859 check on UTwente, it`s on and
audible. But at 2156 back here definitely off -- maybe it was an
antenna rotation hiatus (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 7490, UT Sat June 13 at 0000, after FKB gospel huxter
finishes, WBCQ with a spot commercial for SDRs; 0001.5 dead air; 0002
a few seconds of old favorite song ``Wheels``; 0003 another tune; 0004
ID for AM 780, Monticello-Presque Isle, and a bit of USA Radio News,
cut off; 0004.5 finally ``William Tell Overture`` theme of `AAAWWW`
starts, 0007.8 among his first words, ``confusion``.

5130 and 6159.9 were not on at 0000, but at 0003 at least a carrier
from 5130 but can`t make out any mod. 6159.9 on by 0019 check, running
17 seconds behind 7490; and 5130 VP, unknown delay.

However, I`ve just noticed sporadic E MUF up to 106 MHz, so away I go
hoping to catch an FM DX opening here: see MEXICO, and USA.

John Carver fills us in on the rest of `AAAWWW`:

``Tonight's show started on 7490 four minutes late this evening and no
signal on 5130, and 6160 was carrying something else. Six minutes in,
5130 and 6160 were both carrying AAWWW but then 6160 went into Mama
Mia or some such. Allan and Angela in the studio. Allan blamed the
late start on computer problems. 6160 back to AAWWW by the next check.
Opening talk about America and the world a "ball of confusion". The
foam in Allan's headphones began to break apart and he had black
flecks of it on his face and shirt. Then back to the ball of
confusion. A very animated Angela this evening went into a long rant
that I won't get into as it was a bit distasteful.

Phone call at 0019 from a caller who said that both Allan and Angela
were correct and then went on to say that most of the problems in this
country were due to vaccines and the way they were administered.
Another call immediately from a nurse that defended vaccines and
stated that vaccines and good hygiene are what has kept us alive and
healthy. Another immediate phone call from a gentleman who is learning
how to drive a truck and complaining about how difficult it was.

Allan then launches an appeal for racial diversity and acceptance.
Then a long discussion between Allan and the animated Angela about
recent events in this country. Closing prayer at 0056 and then reading
of two emails at 0058. Program was off the air at 0100 in the middle
of a sentence. John, Mid-North Indiana`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. Sporadic E opening, UT Saturday June 13, mainly from N/W
MEXICO, q.v., but also AZ:

0101, 92.3, traffic report about I-17 freeway, and State Road 89, then
weather by YL sponsored by Howard Air, news about marches in ``The
Valley``, all of which mean it has to be Phœnix AZ, viz.:
``KTAR-FM 92.3 GLENDALE AZ USA 98.0 kW 545.0 m 33-19-58 112-03-48 HD
KTAR Arizona's News Station NEWS/TALK KTAR NEWS``. See 0135 below

0104, 95.1, lucky ID right at tune-in ``95.1 KTTI``, C&W beer song.
``KTTI 95.1 YUMA AZ USA 50.0 kW 75.0 m 32-38-31 114-33-34 COUNTRY
TODAY`S BEST COUNTRY KTTI``. 1584 km = 984 stmi

0113, 90.3, fringe local relay of KHYM with commercials for Dodge
City, Woodward, i.e. 490-watt KHEV Fairview OK, mixing with another
English station with GEICO ad, perhaps 100 kW KFLR, Family Life Radio,
Phœnix. (db does not show KHEV as KHYM relay)

0121, 97.3 sports talk in English, Es fades, soon gone, not // OK on
1390 or 640. No such station in AZ. Could be 50 kW KWFN San Diego CA,
also with several low-power co-channel relays in the area, including
one for Dan Sheedy

0135, 92.3, ``KTAR News`` and fade-out as opening is ending? 1340 km =
833 stmi. Same bearing as Mexicali heard earlier

0135, 91.9, music in English, seems like Es strength rather than KS
fringe but could be 48 kW KBDD, Winfield (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, WOR)

This report dispatched at 0449 UT June 13
