Glenn Hauser logs December 15, 2024

Sunday, December 15 2024

** CANADA. 300 MCW kHz, Dec 15 at 0728 UT, dash and YIV, 500 watts at
Island Lake, MB. Is this LW or MW? depends on which sideband (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA [and non]. 1040 kHz, Dec 15 at 0424 UT, wobbler under WHO;
this time not accompanied by same vs 870 WWL (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 9790, Dec 15 at 0331, CRI English relay S9+25 in English, but
modulation somewhat suppressed and extremely distorted; instead of
5910 as supposed to be in B24. Something`s always wrong at RacioCuba
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. RF 17, Dec 15 at 1628 UT, K17JN-D Enid, still mis-IDing
at K17JI-D, and *still* no audio on 17-1 3ABN. Who cares? No closed
captioning either. But still same programming on 17-6 with audio
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. RF 27, Dec 15 at 1700 UT, surprise, KFOR-TV ``4`` is
repeating its 75th anniversary special from last June`s
semi-sesquicentennial; complete 28-minute program and other anniv
stuff on website:
https://kfor.com/video/kfor-75th-special-the-visionaries/9777776/
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. MCW NDB bandscan Dec 15 at 0358-0405 UT:

210, JBA carrier. Nothing in NAm per RNA; DXIC has IOB, 25 watts,
Mount Sterling KY - but could be a birdie.

326, MA, 400 watts at Midland TX.

329, PMV, 25 watts at Plattsmouth NE

359, GGF, 25 watts at Grant NE - more definite than my Oct 6 log.
Grant is in southwest Nebraska, south of Ogallala

414, JBA carrier. Too many possibilities: closest is 25 watt GL at
Goodland KS; others in NE, OH, KY, MT (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 293 MCW kHz, Dec 15 at 0725 UT, NDBs UI qUIncy IL mixing
with FBY FairBurY NE. Takes a while for them to lessen overlap with
slightly different periods. RNA list shows 6.60 seconds for FBY and
6.180 for UI (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 385 MCW kHz, Dec 15 at 0742, UWL, 25-watt NDB at New Castle
IN, new for me? No, but rarely logged, previously Jan 24, 2018 and Oct
25, 2022 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2273 monitoring: confirmed UT
Sunday December 15 at 0117 the 0100 on WRMI 9955, S9+28 into Georgia
SDR.

Via Ricky Leong, Calgary: ``Message on WRMI's Facebook page: `0645 UTC
Sunday:  There has been a large explosion, probably of one or more
transformers, at the WRMI transmitter building which occurred at
approximately 0415 UTC Sunday. Electrical power is out to most of our
building, and most of our transmitters are off the air. We still have
power for transmitters #11-14 which are 7570, 5850, 7780 and 5010 kHz.
7570 kHz is scheduled to be off the air until Sunday evening, but the
other three frequencies will be on the air until at least their normal
sign-off at 1500 UTC Sunday. Florida Power and Light is sending a crew
to our site as soon as possible to determine the exact cause of the
problem and to repair it. We'll update you as soon as we have more
information.`

A reply from Joseph M Caracciolo: ``the explosion you heard is one or
more high voltage expulsion fuses opening the primary voltage feed to
one or more transformers. They opened (exploded) due to a primary or
secondary short on one or more of the transformers or possibly a short
downstream from the transformers`` - does he have inside info?

Update via William Fenech: ``1600 UTC Sunday December 15: We are still
without power in most of our transmitter building. Florida Power and
Light has promised several times to send a crew out to investigate and
repair the problem, but no one has arrived, and no one has been able
to give us any information by telephone either. This is very unusual,
as we generally have very few power outages here, and they are usually
very short if they occur. But they are totally absent now. Hopefully
they will respond soon. Meanwhile, all frequencies are off the air at
this time.``

At 1618 UT Dec 15 into Maryland SDR, no signals from the WRMIs which
would be on, 9395, 15770 and 17790.

WOR 2273 also confirmed UT Sunday December 15 at 0356 already underway
early on WA0RCR, 1860 AM, MO, S9/+10 direct, finishing the nominal

** U S A [and non]. 5935, Dec 15 at 0430, as always, this WWCR with
PMS puts out a horrible spurfield of varying carrier peak squeals
between 5925 and 5945, and even weaker ones another 5 kHz to 5920 vs
WTWW, and 5950 vs WRMI if on. Makes it impossible to locate even a JBA
carrier from Voz Missionária, Brasil which Carlos Gonçalves, Portugal
measures on 5939.7v. Coincidentally, Zacharias Liangas reports Dec 15
using an Australian SDR:

``5935 WWCR-2 woman with prayer. 0935 with male speaker – prayer?-.
The signal suffers a bit from a series of hum strings spaced around
2+5 kHz in both sidebands. The Signal is rather steady with very fast
fades up to -20dbm, maximized at -60dbm in the H Valley kSDR`` (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. Trans-Atlantic JBA MW carrier search, Dec 15 at 0405:
657, 675, 819, 855, 1044, 1053, 1089, 1305. Mainly Spainly, UK; 675
major signal is 600 kW from Qatar. 819 major signal is 300 kW from
Egypt; this was stronger than 855 Spain (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
