** CHINA. 9480, April 22 before and after 1830, S6-S3 in French, i.e.
CRI at 18-20 via Xianyang 59 site in north central China, of all
places, 500 kW, 317 degrees toward France. VP reception today, hardly
anything else extracontinental on any band except 13670 Madagascar
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** OKLAHOMA. 91.7, April 22 at 0446 past 0506 UT and later, dead air
from KOSU instead of `The Spy`; everyone asleep depending on
automation? (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)
** SUDAN [and non]. 7205, April 23 at 0301, S8-S9 open carrier, surely
Sudan Radio, Omdurman; someham pretends to be AM by tuning his
LSB-only signal here, but no QRM on USB. At prime time in the morning,
also JBA carriers on 7180 > 7140 presumed VOBMEritreans. By 0328 maybe
trace of music. 0342 I switch to UTwente SDR in Holland, where 7205 is
S9 but clearly barely modulated, occasional talkwords peaking, 0345
bit of music. WRTH says irr. from *0300; Eibi says from *0257; Aoki
from *0200. At 0350 & 0356, I JB hear some Horn-of-Africash music. A
4+1 timesignal at 0400 cuts thru, 11 seconds late. Don`t rely on this
for navigation! Then some mumbletalk, news in Arabic? I daresay even
nearby one would have to turn the volume up full and hope for the
best. Dumps off air abruptly at 0405:15*. I switch to offset BFO to
hear any carrier come back, which it finally does at *0423,
again/still, JBM. I must also say, the FPU stations do a much better
job of broadcasting to Sudans from outside. Manuel Mendez, Spain,
hears 7205 in his evenings, and also the external service grandiosely
appelled ``Voice of Africa`` on 9505 going from French to English at
1715. I wonder if that modulation be any better (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)
