Glenn Hauser logs April 17-18, 2021

Sunday, April 18 2021

** NORTH AMERICA. 6950-USB, April 18 at 0004, S9+20 pirate music in
``Boogie-woogie Country Girl``, 0005 segué to ``This Little Girl`s
Gonna Rockin``` --- bet it`s Wolverine Radio this time on a theme of
songs about girls; should be plenty of those! Yup, 0034.5 check,
Wolverine Radio ID; still going at 0101. Many more logs here with
playlists, SSTV IDs:
https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,80432.0.html
with famous portrait of a girl:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Girl_with_a_Pearl_Earring
``Girl with a Pearl Earring (Dutch: Meisje met de parel) is an oil
painting by Dutch Golden Age painter Johannes Vermeer dated c. 1665``
--- makes very interesting further reading. Someone might now want to
add that she has been immortalised as a Wolverine Radio SSTV QSL.
Sure hope she`s P.D. by now (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6950-USB, April 18 at 0243 UT, still a pirate here,
sounds as strong as Wolverine, S9+20, same transmitter? These say
Drunken DJ Radio took over at 0115 and posting requests here:
https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,80432.15.html
0259 ID as Drunken DJ Radio, asking for requests, and refers to
earlier Wolverine broadcast. Then ``8 Miles Hi`` by The Birds. BTW,
this has a much better signal than Area 51 on WBCQ, q.v. at USA, and
no RHC QRM! At 0307 I notice that switching to 6950-LSB, instead of
zero, I get residual audio, only the bass-line of the music, rather
than full fidelity on USB! Not sure if this be transmitter anomaly or
receiver, but with straight-up passband equally between LSB and USB,
and not noticed such on other SSB signals (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 17855, Sat Apr 17 at 2023, REE is a JBA carrier to North
America amid G1 storming and K-index of 3. 15520 backwards manages
only S3-S5 at 2027, but somewhat readable, a lot better in comparison.
At this hour, REE would have a much better chance of reaching us on 13
or 11 MHz (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 9830, Apr 17 at 2222, again no signal from VOT English to
us, just RTTY clatter. Something`s always erroneous at Emirler (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2082 monitoring: Richard Langley
reports about Saturday at 1300: ``Terrible reception on 15770 kHz here
in NB today (17 April) but I could get a few snippets of good audio
occasionally. So it is confirmed. I was recording the frequency for
Shortwave Radiogram hoping to get good images from the 200th edition
of the program. Not this time. Don't know if the poor reception was
due to the aftermath of the geomagnetic storm earlier in the day or
something else.``

Not confirmed on IRRS 7290, supposed to be Sat Apr 17 at 1801: via
UTwente, as usual modulation cuts on late at 1800:26 with Feature
Story News, not just headlines, 1803:46 music not WOR and later a YL
preacher. There may be a problem with automation scheduling system.

Confirmed Sat Apr 17 from 1952:06 on WA0RCR, 1860-AM, MO, VG via
nearby remote.

Next IRRS broadcast scheduled for webcast only Saturday at 2330.
https://www.nexus.org/mp3/
As last week, starts with Feature Story News - week in review. But
after another ID, WOR 2082 does start at 2334. Yet fades to black at
2400 as I am talking about WBCQ 13570/9330; back for a few words about
WHAM, then replaced by classical piano music fill. FYI: a 29:00 minute
program will not fit into a 26-minute slot: either let it run another
3 minutes, please, or ditch the news review before it.

Also confirmed UT Sunday April 18 from 0331 on WA0RCR, 1860-AM, MO,
direct at S9+20 but not overcoming high noise level. Next:

2200vUT Sunday WBCQ 6160v Area 51 to WSW
2300 UT Sunday WRMI 7780 to NE
0030 UT Monday WRMI 7730 to WNW
0230 UT Monday WRMI 7780 to NE, 5800 to SSE
1030 UT Wednesday WRMI 5850 to NW
2100 UT Wednesday WRMI 7780 to NE
2100 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW
2200 UT Wednesday WRMI 9955 [jammed?] to SSE
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S

** U S A. 5850, UT Sun Apr 18 at 0100-0200, `Encore` classical music
hour from R. Tumbril via WRMI. A great mixture of familiar and
unfamiliar pieces. Try to hear it now every week when reception is
best across America; if not, 25 hours later UT Mon at 0200 on 5950.
The 5850 broadcast is also on // 7780 not so good here but to the NE
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 6159.93, UT Sun April 18, Area 51 via WBCQ is only S7, even
tuned to LSB where the splash from 6165 RHC hits S9. Program just
ending is `Great Lakes Radio Conspiracy`. Checking this after pirate
on 6950-USB/LSB which has a *much* better signal, and NO QRM. At this
hour, there is NOTHING on 6155, 6150, 6145, or 6140. But since RHC
could jump to 6145 at will, the safest place for WBCQ would be 6155.
Unfortunately, US SW stations are not accustomed to addressing QRM
problems so rapidly, if ever (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 15825, Apr 17 at 1925, WWCR-1 is S9+ tnx to sporadic E,
reinforcing its squeal. Similar megameter-away 15610, WEWN is also S9,
both much better than normal. 13845 WWCR-3 is also boosted to S9+25,
the SSOB. Nothing much on 17 MHz except 17530 VOA, but I had just
heard hams in FL and VA JBA on 18140-USB. Can hardly wait for Es MUF
to surpass 88 MHz this spring/summer. Or even 28.3+ MHz for hambeacons
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
