UT, pileups on several CB channels, always with hets since those guys
can`t achieve accurate AM frequencies; also some LSB freebanders
further up including one in Spanish. But I proceed to 10m beacon band
where stuff can be identified:
28209-, June 24 at 1846, VVV DE N8PVL/B LIVONIA --- two different WPM
speeds as heard before, from Michigan.
28264-, June 24 at 1848, DE AB8Z/B PARMA --- Ohio, also heard before;
strong but deep fades.
28281, June 24 at 1851, DE W8EH EM79 --- slow CW and no /B suffix.

To help discover 10M band openings, the NSRC has been operating a
propagation beacon on 28.297 MHz since 2001. It is located at the
Heller Nature Center in Highland Park, IL about 27 miles north of
downtown Chicago. The beacon was built from a Radio Shack HTX-100
running 5 watts out to roof mounted Cushcraft AR-10 half wave vertical
at 18 ft. CW message keying is performed by an Ultimate PicoKeyer. The
10M band is open a lot more often than you think, even during periods
of low sunspot activity, so be sure to check the beacon section
between 28.175 and 28.300 regularly, you may be pleasantly surprised
with what you hear. Reception reports are always welcome and over the
years we have received them from over 30 countries and from every
continent except Antarctica. We will gladly QSL if requested, just
send your report to KK9H`` --- QRZ.com
There were also audible a number of phone contacts above 28300, but
not pursued with IDs to be sparse and imprecise.
Sporadic E from this area correlates with some MUF spikes past 88 MHz,
between us, so I spend a few minutes in the car circa 2030 UT, but
nothing unusual in several scans of 88-102 MHz. I then retire for a
semi-nap to the stereo headphone accompaniment of KUCO-FM 90.1:

yet from an Allan twit, last one dated June 23 when it was still
operative. However I do have a weak carrier on 9333.0, not noticed
before with or without 9330. Still off past 1500, and 9333 still on
past 1503, S4-S6 open carrier. About an hour later, remotes do not
hear either one. Next check 1842, still no 9330, while 9333 JBA

** U S A. Just had a call from George McClintock, Nashville TN, that
he is getting WNOE, Atlanta GA on 1690, oldies, as late as 1450 UT,
rather late on a long day for skywave. I wonder if it`s sporadic E
affecting MF. WNOE was 1060 in New Orleans, still a call there on FM.
Not yet as such in FCC, or radio-locator.com --- 1690 was WMLB, I
think gone for a while. 73, (Glenn Hauser, OK, June 23, WOR)
Glenn: Don't you believe that it's WNOE. I assume he misheard the
calls {But see below!}
I tuned 1690 in when I saw your email. They were playing "Georgia," it
was followed by a station ID of WMLB, Avondale Estates-Atlanta at
11:41 a.m. EDT.
The station has been on the air intermittently for the past year. I've
heard no live announcers or anything other than old interviews and
music.
I've seen them run a notice in the Atlanta newspaper about seeking to
renew their license. I think these broadcasts are just intended to
keep
the station active for that purpose, so that it's not deemed dark.
There's nothing different in what I'm hearing today than what I've
heard
for months. mc (Mike Cooper, Atlanta)
Sounds like George is simply mistaking the callsign when he's hearing
it. http://www.topazdesigns.com/ambc still shows the call as WMLB.
{but see below!}
Here's a post from "Harry S." in Buford, GA on radiodiscussions.com
from approx. 6 weeks ago that may shed some light on what's going on:
"Today (Thursday, May 7, 2020) WMLB 1690 AM switched from the
continuous loop of testing announcements and the same music loop
regular station announcements every other song (no mention of
"testing) and a larger variety of music played. This was interspersed
with old public service interviews conducted with Jeff Davis (former
PD for 1160) with various local individuals that are leading groups in
the area such as Georgia State Patrol recruiting and Veterans Affairs
Jobs in the Atlanta area among other guests."
Although I'm sure the DXers on this board near Atlanta would disagree,
this is one expanded band station that I wouldn't mind having return
(I still WMLB for my logbooks up here). WVON is my only real
consistent visitor on 1690 here at night, although KDMT will make the
occasional visit to Omaha. 73, Rick Dau, on the road in Davenport,
Iowa``
Glenn, They gave the WNOE ID Atlanta this morning. At 9:35pm tonight I
heard the WMLB ID. At 9:44pm tonight I heard the WNOE Atlanta ID ---
Weird. George McClintock 6-23-2020``
Yes, NOE does ``rhyme`` with MLB. Could 1690 be relaying feed from New
Orleans with its IDs intermixed? (Glenn)
They ID "WNOE Atlanta". (George 6-24-2020)
Meanwhile, 1608-1630+ UT June 24, I have been listening to 1690 via
KiwiSDR in Knoxville-Oak Ridge --- some good peaks, fadeouts. One Kiwi
in Jasper GA is unavailable and uncovers MW anyway; a couple in
Alabama don`t get it.
Oldies, IDs between every 2 or 3 songs so far only as ``This is
WMLB-AM, 1690 kHz, Avondale Estates -- Atlanta``. At 1617 ``stay
safe`` which would seem to refer to something current in 2020y.
Recognizable tunes between 1608 and 1644 included: Be My Love,
Tequila, Her Tender Lips, Who`s Cryin` Now, Good Golly, Miss Molly;
Crazy, That`ll Be the Day, Chantilly Lace.
George says the ``WNOE`` IDs just say Atlanta, not with the city of
license Avondale Estates. Also before 1600 they were in a talk show
rather than music.
And: ``In all fairness to people that heard the ID with the correct
city of licensee, I did not actually hear a legal ID at the top of the
hour or 45 minutes delayed by programming as required by the FCC.
The IDs were several times during the hour with different call
letters. This still seems strange. George McClintock 6-24-2020``
GH: continuing on 1690 via Knoxville: 1644 UT suddenly switches to
``Atlanta`s Business from News-Talk 1160``, interview. Her ``left leg
completely rotted to the hip``, etc. Yuk.
It appears that 1160 is currently ``The Quest, Atlanta`s Catholic
Radio`` with EWTN. FB as WCFO Newstalk 1160 stopped after March 2018.
So 1690 is playing old stuff from another station?
While playing music the cuts were 2 minutes max; seems they were
truncated. Will try to hear any ToH ID at least.
The interview continued until 1707 UT with no break, concluding with
plug for a related event on September (or December?) 9, and the woman
with the leg problem was Amy Copeland; 1708 another canned WMLB ID,
back to music, 1711 segue, 1714 segue, 1716 ID, 1718 tune, 1721 La
Bamba, 1723 segue, 1726 Georgia, etc., etc.; fading weaker into noise
level, so 1735 tune-out without my ever hearing a ``WNOE`` ID.
BUT: Mike Cooper, Atlanta, reports at 2032 UT June 24 to the WOR iog:
``Now I've heard this bizarre ID, as well. Apologies for suggesting
this was misheard, by George. I've heard the WNOE ID, as well, just
minutes away from an WMLB ID. Maybe they plan to change the call
letters? I didn't find anything in FCC AM database on WNOE. As I write
this, am listening to an interview with a Georgia State Patrolman,
done by host who refers to 1160, which was a business-news station
then-owned by the current owner of WMLB. Odd.`` (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)
** U S A. Here`s another oddity --- I also heard over the phone from
George. ``"This is a test of the text to speech system" over and over.
I can hear it solid around Nashville, TN. 1680 AM. When in a fixed
location including my house, the signal does not vary. It`s on the
same frequency as one of the TN department of transportation
transmitters which is under the "This is a test ....." station. George
McClintock 6-24-2020, 1613 UT`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
UNIDENTIFIED. 12302-USB, June 24 at 1446, informal Spanish 2-way
ragchew, some whistling, stronger one with ``engine noise``, S9-S8;
weaker one slightly off frequency; IDs? Of course not! Per Klingenfuss
2002y, 12302-SSB was a ship station channel 1225 paired with QSX
13149.0 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
